The Eagles Look Terrible, So Why Do I Think They Will Be OK?
Don’t just read the headline!
Before you jump down my throat, I saw exactly what you saw in the first four games of the season! The Eagles managed to defeat the Green Bay Packers and the New Orleans Saints. They also found a way to blow what looked like a sure fire home opener win vs Atlanta and then the debacle in Tampa.
Will the REAL Philadelphia Eagles please stand up! Which team is going to be here for the long haul? The opportunistic defense that sealed the win in Brazil? The offense that misfired in Florida? The enthusiastic group that dominated the Saints? It’s been a mixed bag and my answer might shock you!
The Defense has certainly not been good enough!
The Tampa Bay effort was unacceptable and the tackling was even worse. This is coming off a weekend where the defense under Vic Fangio was the star of the victory at New Orleans. It was shocking that they generated such little pass rush and the short passing game of Tampa dominated them. There have been good moments and bad moments through four weeks, but don’t just create a narrative that the defense is their biggest problem.
The Quarterback has consistently been the problem
Don’t let Kellen Moore escape the war zone without catching a little shrapnel. His performance has certainly not gained much confidence as his plan looks quite pedestrian. The problem is that when your quarterback is consistently making poor decisions you won’t succeed.
As Tom Brady said on the broadcast AFTER his fumble “You have to have pocket awareness”. When you are being chased in the pocket and you escape the pressure you have to remember that the pursuer doesn’t just evaporate. His failure to recognize this cost them again. Hurts has been an issue for 21 games and it does not seem to be getting any better.
Nick Sirianni does not appear to be in control
It’s been a long stretch where the Sirianni administration appears to be spiraling out of control. His ability to formulate a plan for success is definitely in question. He can’t articulate his strategies and comes with the tired response of “It’s on me”.
That only can be acceptable for so long. He was given some coordinators with a pedigree of success and the ride has still been very choppy. All the bumper sticker slogans you want to offer don’t make you a winning coach. He appears lost.
The Eagles currently are like a game of CLUE that just started
There are way too many suspects and far too many murder weapons to decipher who or what is to blame. The one thing that is clear is that they are a mess that somehow has managed to not sink their season. At 2-2 heading into the bye week, they should be getting healthier quickly and their schedule allows them plenty of opportunity to rebound.
The Eagles schedule is actually quite forgiving
They can certainly use some time off and the schedule the rest of the way isn’t looking that rugged. Even with the Commanders off to a great start you can’t be scared of them just yet, plus there are two games head to head later in the season. It’s way too early to sound the alarms, but I would suggest that you remember where to locate the button just in case!
