Will Vic Fangio Be Enough To Make The Eagles Defense Better?
Last year the Eagles defense was a disaster. To be fair, the whole team was a disaster, but the defense was the worst part. Some of that was the lack of talent. Some of it was coaching. But overall, it was just not good enough, and by the season’s end, they were arguably the worst defense in the league.
Will The Eagles Defense Be Better This Year?
Will the Eagles defense be better this year? They certainly added more talent. CJ Gardner Johnson, Devin White, Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean. They are also hoping guys like Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis take the next step. But they also lost Haason Reddick. It is a more talented defense, but we don’t know if it is talented enough to win anything.

Can the new Defensive Coordinator, Vic Fangio, make the difference though? ESPN’s Adam Schefter joined Kincade and Salciunas this morning, and he seemed to think Fangio is enough to make up for some of the problems.
“I don’t know that they have as much defensive talent as they’ve had in other years. I think that the defensive talent is solid and I think they’re counting on Vic Fangio, to make sure that there are no issues, that everything gets ramped up and everything goes the way they want it to. But, you know, I don’t think it’s a given this defense is going come in and play lights out the way that some people think.
I just think the coaching change is going to be one big difference. I have come to expect that of Vic, because that’s, you know, to me the kind of coach he is and we’ll see if he can come through like I think he can.”
Schefter did not seem to think this Eagles defense would be over-the-top great. But he does seem to believe Vic Fangio will lend it some stability.
Can you win a Super Bowl without an elite defense? It is not unheard of. Defenses have won while being middle of the pack, but they are usually elite in some category. Maybe they give up 25 points per game, but they get a lot of takeaways, or they get to the QB a lot.
The Eagles defense in 2017 was not elite. In fact in that Super Bowl, they were kind of bad. But they made a play when it counted. Brandon Graham got the strip sack, and Derek Barnett fell on it. In 2022, the Eagles’ defense was great all season, but then it couldn’t get a single stop when it mattered.
Maybe having Vic Fangio, instead of Sean Desai, Matt Patricia, or Jonathan Gannon, can be the difference. A guy who is proven, the same way Jim Schwartz was proven back on that Super Bowl-winning team. They don’t have to be great all the time, they just have to be great when it matters. Having a solid coach can be the key to accomplishing that.
