Could Quinyon Mitchell Begin His 1st Season In The Slot?
When The Eagles drafted Quinyon Mitchell, many automatically assumed he would be the other starter across from Darius Slay. That very well may still happen. But at least early in camp. He has not been playing with the 1s. Both Kelee Ringo and Isaiah Rodgers are getting more snaps with the 1s than him.
That could be Vic Fangio and the Eagles making a rookie earn it. By the end of camp, Quinyon Mitchell could be getting all the run with the 1s. But it could also be a sign of what we will see at the start of the season.
There is another way for Quinyon Mitchell to get on the field early though. Mitchell has reportedly been getting snaps in the slot. Tim McManus joined The Best Show Ever this week and told us that could be a path to Mitchell getting extra playing time early.
Quinyon Mitchell In The Slot?
From what Tim told us, Mitchell is looking solid early in camp. Not many big moments, but he looks like he belongs. Tim noted that is what you want to see for a guy making a jump to the NFL from a weaker conference.
I would like to see Mitchell start opposite Slay. I think he is their most talented player. But they might try to slow play him in. If so, the slot would make sense. Especially given the injury to Cooper DeJean likely putting him behind the 8 ball to start the season in the slot.
Eventually, he will be that second corner. Well actually, he will eventually be the main cornerback. But at least for now, the Eagles aren’t just anointing him the guy. They want him to earn it. Earning it might mean starting the season in the slot, with either Ringo or Rodgers being the CB2.
