Nick Sirianni Needs To Close This Door Once And For All
The first practice of Training Camp 2024 is one week away for the Philadelphia Eagles. I’m sure that Nick Sirianni has lost countless hours of sleep deciding on the bumper sticker slogan that will launch camp. What will be on the tee shirt that sets the tone for this year? If it sounds like I’m mocking him, you couldn’t be more off base.
Yes, that kind of stuff does little for me but I’ve seen first hand how players rally around it. It is more of a positive than anything negative that is created by a few snickers on sports radio. If there is anything I know that Nick Sirianni seems to do well it is to create a positive working environment. His “branding” of this upcoming season is actually very important. I don’t know what Nick has cooked up, but I have a critical piece of advice.
Close the door on the 2023 season
The collapse was epic after what was a glorious, yet imperfect, start to the 2023 season. I don’t need to recount the collapse to you and I can state logically that he doesn’t need to recount it to them. Whatever was the reason for last years disgraceful finish, it was either already fired or has been articulated.
There are no secrets within the walls of Novacare. We may not know exactly what happened but the players do. The new faces don’t care and the fan base just demands that it be fixed. There is no need to relitigate that event.
How does he do it?
If Nick Sirianni wants to change the trajectory of his coaching career it should start with strong direction. I watched Dan Quinn and the 2017 Atlanta Falcons grapple all season under the weight of their own 28-3 Super Bowl collapse. They found themselves addressing the motivation to respond to that loss all through the season and before their two playoff games.
You face a weight of expectation but add in a dose of history and it can cause a team to drown under the pressure. There should be an edict from Day One that no one on the team is going to address the collapse of the previous season. It’s a new day, we have turned the page and it won’t be a part of their 2024 story.
I’ve got confidence he can pull this off
Nick knows what he needs to do. I just don’t know how he is going to present it. Resist the urge to mock. I’m hoping that this part of his job description, his leadership, can now truly become a strength. If you have a suggestion keep it to yourself. Nick is truly in charge.
