Matvei Michkov Is Coming To The Flyers 2 Years Early
When the Flyers first drafted Matvei Michkov, the expectation was that we would not see him in a Flyers jersey for 3 years. He still had a 3-year contract with SKA St Petersburg in the KHL. But it seems that the timetable has been moved up. Nothing is official yet from the Flyers, or SKA, but the report is that Michkov will terminate his KHL contract to move over to the USA to begin his Flyers career.
The Matvei Michkov Era Begins
The Flyers drafted Matvei Mickov 7th overall in the 2023 NHL draft. He was considered one of the best players in this past draft, behind only Hockey phenom Connor Bedard. He has the upside of a 40-goal score, something a Flyer has accomplished only 3 times this century, with the last coming in 2009 with Jeff Carter.
Michkov has the chance to be the true superstar the Flyers have lacked. He is obviously still a prospect and has only played overseas. But he looked the part, including a tremendous performance as a 16-year-old at the 2021 IIHF U18 World Championship, where he was named MVP.

Flyers GM Danny Briere stated that no matter what the decision is with Matvei Michkov, they won’t change their plan to keep rebuilding. But if he is actually coming over, as he appears to be, that is about to be put to the test.
Even if they do plan to keep rebuilding, which is probably the right choice, Michkov will change things. If he is as good as people expect, the Flyers are going to be better too. They overperformed last year with a roster that probably wasn’t good enough to fall just short of the playoffs. But if you add a 40-goal scorer to that squad, maybe they do sneak in.
Again, it is not official yet, but it seems the Matvei Michkov era has begun.
