Phillies MLB Trade Deadline Candidates: Luis Robert Jr.
The Philadelphia Phillies solidified their spot in the top tier of MLB teams with an incredibly hot start.
They entered the season with World Series expectations despite a relatively slow offseason. Dave Dombrowski showed confidence in the current makeup of the group by keeping his core pieces together with no major additions to the starting lineup.

What does the relatively slow strategy and the high demands from Philadelphia fans mean for the Phillies ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline?
This is a big market team operating on a hefty budget trying to take advantage of a window for World Series contention. Expect Dombrowski to make some deals.
Luis Robert Jr.
Jeff Passan of ESPN reported the Phillies’ interest in Luis Robert Jr., Kyle Tucker, and Randy Arozarena.
Robert returned to the Chicago White Sox from the IL with a bang on Tuesday night. When he’s healthy, he’s one of the best center fielders in the majors.
Robert won a Gold Glove after a pandemic-shortened rookie season in 2020. He broke out offensively during the 2021 season with a .338 batting average and a .946 OPS (MLB Average: .728) in 68 games. He missed over three months with a hip injury, however.
The Cuban outfielder also inspired some confidence for the lowly White Sox with an excellent season in 2023. He hit 38 home runs in a career high 145 games, which landed him 12th in AL MVP voting.
FanGraphs ranked Luis Robert Jr. the best fielder on the White Sox from 2021-2023 with 14 defensive runs saved (DRS). Johan Rojas is the only Phillies position player who recorded more during that span (in only about 13% of the innings.)

Robert has also averaged over 20 stolen bases per 162 game pace during his MLB career.
The 26-year-old played only 311 of 486 regular-season games (roughly 64%) from 2021-2023. Before the moonshot home run in Chicago’s crosstown rivalry, he hadn’t played since suffering a hip flexor injury on April 5.
An underwhelming on-base percentage and batting average last season might also cause concerns with a player who will command big money and a considerable trade package.
Phillies Looking For Outfielders?
While the Phillies stormed out of the gates, Nick Castellanos struggled to begin the 2024 season. He ranked in the bottom tier of qualified MLB hitters in most major categories in late May.
Rojas began the season in the lineup because of his glove. His underwhelming offense won’t pick up the slack if Castellanos doesn’t find a better rhythm.
Brandon Marsh had provided serviceable offense in somewhat of a platoon role through the first two months of the season. He suffered a hamstring injury on June 2 and made the outfield offense a more immediate concern.
Will the Phillies wait for Castellanos to bust out of his slump? Will they look to bolster their outfield offense with another bat to split time with Marsh?
Return Package
The expectation for a World Series will encourage action. Dombrowski has prospects at his disposal to offer a last-place team like the White Sox.
Any contending baseball executive should consider moving talented prospects for short-term success, but they must select the right deals.
The White Sox might ask for Andrew Painter in a potential deal. Would the Phillies let go of their prized young pitcher for Luis Robert Jr. this season?
Painter underwent Tommy John surgery in July 2023. The Phillies don’t expect him to pitch again until the 2025 season.
Scott Lauber said on 97.5 The Fanatic that a trade partner would have to blow the Phillies away to land Painter, Aidan Miller, or Justin Crawford. He believes Mick Abel is a likelier trade chip.
“I wouldn’t put him in the untouchable category, but… I think he’s still somebody that even though he’s off to a slow start in AAA – he’s struggling – I don’t think they think less of him. I think they still believe he’s a major league pitcher… I think they’d have to get a really, really good offer to go get him.” –Scott Lauber
Deal Or No Deal?
The Phillies have successfully sold high on top pitching prospects like Kyle Drabek (for Roy Halladay) and Sixto Sanchez (for J.T. Realmuto) in the past.
However, considering Robert’s injury history, Dombrowski might hesitate to trade Painter, Crawford, or Miller to acquire a player set to earn $15 million in 2025. He could also earn $20 million in each of the following two seasons (based on club options).
If Dombrowski wants to chase the blockbuster move and hand over top prospects, he’s more likely to pursue Kyle Tucker. The Houston outfielder has a better track record of durability than Luis Robert Jr.
Landing Tucker would also require a long-term financial commitment, but the Phillies would be more likely to sign a big check for a player who’s more reliable to stay on the field.
The Phillies would need specific circumstances to play out for a deal with the White Sox to work.
If they can’t land Tucker, they might shift their focus to Luis Robert Jr. as their top option. If they can trade for him without losing Andrew Painter, you could see Robert replace Johan Rojas in center field at Citizens Bank Park.
