Flyers Lose 2023-24 Finale On Bizarre Empty-Net Goal
John Tortorella and the Philadelphia Flyers pulled the goaltender with a tie score in the 82nd game of the 2023-24 season. They were clinging to desperate playoff hopes entering the final contest, but the Washington Capitals buried a game-winner on the empty net to beat the Flyers.
The Flyers, apparently, weren’t aware that the Detroit Red Wings had eliminated them just seconds earlier in a bizarre sequence.
Flyers Leave An Empty Net
The Flyers needed a regulation victory against the Capitals. Overtime wouldn’t have helped their cause. They also needed a Detroit loss in regulation to stay alive.
The Red Wings trailed the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 in the final minute of regulation. David Perron scored with under five seconds left to send the game to overtime. The tie score guaranteed his team at least one point and crushed the hopes of Philadelphia fans with their eyes on dual screens around 9:30 pm EST.
Shift back to Philadelphia. T.J. Oshie quickly scored on the empty net for the game-winning goal against the Flyers. Washington’s 2-1 regulation victory, in turn, eliminated the Red Wings in an ironic twist of events.
Patrick Kane scored an anti-climactic shootout winner that the Detroit bench barely seemed to notice.
The Pittsburgh Penguins entered the night with hopes of a do-or-die situation on Long Island on Wednesday. The unusual empty-net goal also eliminated them.
Did John Tortorella know about the wild finish to regulation at the Bell Centre in Montreal?
“I got info on the Detroit game right after they scored their (Washington’s) empty-netter. I think it happened pretty close together, but I was pulling him (goaltender Sam Ersson)… (I) didn’t know anything was going on with Detroit at that time, but immediately after that, our video guys told us that Detroit just went to overtime.” -John Tortorella
The 2023-24 Flyers
The Flyers exceeded their preseason expectations drastically in 2023-24. A team that most NHL analysts picked to finish in the league’s basement occupied a playoff spot for most of the season.
The first season under the leadership of a reconstructed front office brought a lot of hope to an organization that desperately needed it. Danny Briere and Keith Jones might be happy in an overall sense. It doesn’t mean the loss to the Capitals didn’t hurt the players.
Captain Sean Couturier spoke with balance and encapsulated the big picture with acknowledgement to a tough loss.
“I think as a team, as an organization, nobody really gave us a chance. And here we are in game 82 fighting for a playoff spot, so that’s a big positive. Obviously, right now, it’s tough to really swallow and accept the fact that we were in such a good position a couple weeks ago. We just couldn’t get it done.” -Sean Couturier
The Wells Fargo Center crowd gave some well-deserved stick taps to John Tortorella and his team when they left their home ice for the final team this season.
