Phillies Avoided Disaster Vs. Braves With Many Bright Spots
Look, if two games into the season you were giving up on the Phillies, I have no words for you. If you were pissed off, I completely understand the frustration. The bottom line is that the weekend had many positives.
They avoided a disastrous 0-3 start in the season series against the Atlanta Braves. Here are my takeaways as the head into the Reds series with plenty of bad weather (and possible rain delays) on the schedule.
Zack Wheeler was amazing.
Friday afternoon was classic Zack Wheeler. He gave up five hits, but he buckled down when he had runners in scoring position. He attacked the Braves and kept his team in the mix until Brandon Marsh provided the first runs of the season. What a promising start to the 2024 season!
Max Fried out of the game in the first inning
After the terrible ending of Opening Day, the Phillies found themselves down 2-0 to start the game. Instead of wilting, the offense created one of their most impressive innings EVER against Max Fried. He had to exit trailing 3-2 and only recorded two outs.
Game Three started poorly, but they didn’t fold.
After two awful soul crushing defeats, the Phillies were down 2-0. Once again, they fought back when it would have been easy to hang their heads in frustration. They took a while to get the lead, but they prevailed.
Ranger Suarez isn’t fazed by any challenge.
Ranger Suarez is such a cool customer. He certainly wasn’t perfect early, but he delivered when he needed to. He kept his team in the game until the bats could come alive to salvage the final game of the series.
Bullpen Rebounds
Matt Strahm was atrocious on Friday, but he was fantastic on Sunday. Jose Alvarado was terrible on Friday, but he looked like his old self on Sunday.
The Braves leave feeling like they missed an opportunity.
After blowing the Phillies out in the first two games, another loss would have felt like a foot on the Phillies throat. Instead, the comeback on Sunday creates the doubt in their minds that this team will continue to be their nemesis.
