Philadelphia Eagles Free Agent Targets: Bryce Huff
The Philadelphia Eagles typically prioritize pass rushers as a key building block to a good defense. However, they granted Haason Reddick permission to seek a trade. How will they fill the void if they move Reddick? The Eagles could pursue impending free agent Bryce Huff.
Bryce Huff
The fourth-year edge rusher had a breakout season for the New York Jets in 2023 with 10 sacks and 21 quarterback hits. His previous career highs in the respective categories were 3.5 and 10. The Jets signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Memphis in 2020.
The New York defense finished third in the NFL in defensive DVOA last season. Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams proved themselves as franchise cornerstones, but Huff was their leader in sacks by a significant margin. GM Joe Douglas, however, decided not to use the franchise tag on his emerging star edge rusher.
Huff played the most significant defensive role of his four NFL seasons in 2023 with a career high 480 snaps. However, he was still only on the field for 42% of New York’s defensive snaps. The Jets haven’t given any indication that they value him at the top of the edge rusher market.
I hope the #Jets didn’t develop Bryce huff just to let him blossom for another team.

The Haason Reddick Effect
Jeff McLane and Andrew DiCecco both stated on 97.5 The Fanatic that Reddick’s chances of staying in Philadelphia in 2024 are about 50/50. Howie Roseman spoke at the NFL Combine about the Temple University legend with a non-committal tone that didn’t define his future.
Reddick has earned Pro Bowl selections in his only two seasons in midnight green. He led the Eagles in sacks with 16.5 in 2022 and 11 in 2023. He is the first Eagle to record consecutive double-digit sack seasons since Trent Cole in 2010 and 2011.
If the Eagles trade him, they need to invest heavily in a player like Bryce Huff. Their depth behind Reddick and Josh Sweat wasn’t strong in 2023. Nolan Smith made very little impact in his rookie season, and they shouldn’t expect Brandon Graham to take on a heavy workload at age 36.
Huff’s Fit With The Eagles
Signing Huff could bring certain advantages as opposed to extending Reddick. Reddick is undersized at 6-foot-1, 240 pounds compared to other top-tier edge rushers, and he’s over three years older than the 6-foot-3, 255-pound Huff.
Brian Burns and Danielle Hunter will command the most money among edge rushers on the open market. Pro Football Focus estimated that Huff would receive a free agent deal comparable to the one Reddick signed with the Eagles at age 27 in 2021. The deal could inflate relative to the increased NFL salary cap.
Roseman could potentially flip Reddick for draft compensation and replace him with a younger option. The exact contract numbers to extend Reddick or sign Huff are still to be determined. However, Huff would likely be a cheaper option. McLane also pointed to Huff as a potentially better fit in a 3-4 scheme like the Eagles will use with Vic Fangio.
The theoretical decision to replace Reddick with Huff assumes that Huff will match the same production the Eagles have gotten the past two seasons from their best defensive player. It’s a leap of faith to replace the dynamic talent of Haason Reddick with almost any other NFL player.
The Eagles might not get tremendous trade return for Reddick, but tough decisions are necessary in the NFL. Instead of extending Reddick on a high-priced deal, Howie Roseman might look to repeat the value contract he executed when he first signed Reddick in 2021.
The best defensive player on the Eagles for the past two seasons might be packing his bags to make way for Bryce Huff.
“I haven’t heard any buzz as far as trading Haason Reddick. Just like L'jarius Sneed – he isn’t going to be a fit for everybody. I am 50/50 on Haason Reddick coming back [to the Eagles].”
