Should We Adjust Expectations for the 2023-24 Philadelphia Flyers?
Before I get the tiresome lecture telling me NOT to worry about the standings or the results this season, let me make my points perfectly clear. I am NOT attempting to convince the Philadelphia Flyers or you to do either of the following.
2 Things To Avoid
Scrap the Long-Term Rebuild
I’m not wanting the franchise to take ANY short cuts that would not be in thinking with their long-term vision. I’ve put on the Keith Jones-Danny Briere goggles, and I’m enjoying the view. I see the plan. I see development of players that fit the plan. I’ve heard the plan articulated. Excuse the pun, but I will definitely “trust the process” that involves teaching winning as a standard goal.
Believe in Stanley Cup Contention in 2024
I’d love nothing more than to see this team get playoff “experience” this year where the results would be gravy and a building block for future success.
Now that I’ve cleared that up, here are a few reasons to be optimistic and to let yourself dare to dream of playoff hockey this Spring!
4 Reasons For Optimism
You can look at the standings!
The Flyers are just two points out of first place in the Metropolitan Division standings. As of Saturday, they’re even with the first place New Yorrk Rangers with 15 regulation losses. It’s wild, and the season is 56% complete. Would you not look at the standings if the Phillies were just out of first in late July because it was a surprise?
Sound Defense and Goaltending Tandem
The Flyers are in the top quarter of the NHL in goals against per game. That is something that I never saw coming. I also never expected Nick Seeler and Egor Zamula to have such impressive plus/minus numbers as we approach the All-Star Break.
Though the Carter Hart/Sam Ersson debate gets tiresome at times, Ersson is having the overall better season. He’s also superior in shootouts. The Flyers goaltenders are outstanding. They will need both of them if they hope to play well into the spring.
Flyers Competing With Top NHL Teams
The Flyers are currently 6-2-3 on the season against the teams ahead of them in the league standings. That includes a sweep of the Vancouver Canucks, three of four points against the Vegas Golden Knights, and a huge road shutout of the Winnipeg Jets.
My Summation
I’m going to enjoy this development ride and watch this team grow. If it ends in a playoff berth, that would be amazing. If it doesn’t, they are still establishing the foundation for a much brighter future.
Gotta admit I wish I was lighting the KINCAVE in green today, but the upstart @NHLFlyers get the honor! @975JKShow pic.twitter.com/0G1bZJz0Pe
