Nick Sirianni has no answers. That is the headline. It’s simple enough to see, and it’s right in front of our eyes. That doesn’t absolve Howie Roseman of blame for flawed roster construction of the middle of the defense either.
What started as a season of great promise at 10-1 has officially crashed and burned. I’m not going to listen to the pom-pom crowd that think this team just deserves our full support and more love. You can save that nonsense for the next baseball season standing ovation. Here are biggest problems with the Philadelphia Eagles keeping Jeffrey Lurie up at night.
Roster Construction
How do you go from being tied in Super Bowl LVII with less than a minute to go to this complete disaster? Well, you double down on signing older veterans and wander from the standard organization philosophy of cutting guys loose before they age out. It's been a mark of the Eagles during the ownership tenure of Jeffrey Lurie.
The oldest starting cornerback tandem in the league was a horrendous choice. This team was left thin in the middle of their defense, and opponents have exploited it all season long.
Nick Sirianni has no plan.
The 49ers came in and dominated the Eagles on December 3. It was at that point that we would see how Sirianni dealt with adversity. Well, it’s gotten worse from that point, not better. He has nothing but the same old bumper sticker cliches about how things will improve. Substance is missing, and the style is truly grating on the nerves.
Poor Coordinator Hires
Whoever was responsible for turning over the coordinator jobs to inexperienced NFL candidates shouldn’t have input this offseason when replacing both of them. One new guy to the position would have been fine, but two was reckless. I said it all last summer.
No Urgency in Message, Performance from Jalen Hurts
I am not out on Jalen Hurts. I have never been a fan of the low energy, lead by example, brooding introverted style. It’s not just him. It’s any athlete that doesn’t appear to ever change their approach. He’s the leader of this team, and it isn’t working.
Veterans Who Appear Disinterested
Watching Jason Kelce wander around the sidelines on Sunday frustrated me. The Giants dominated the Eagles starters on the offensive line on Sunday. They were weak in pass protection. What was that all about?
The long-term veterans on this team have been very quiet. Thats unacceptable to me. It also sends up the red flags on that locker room and where it is heading.
NFC Teams Ready to Pass the Eagles
Don’t look now, but so many NFC teams are on the rise. The Packers, the Bears, the Rams, and others are improving. The outlook for 2024 will be far less optimistic than this season.

The Philadelphia Eagles enter the NFC Wild Card Round with several starters in question. Jalen Hurts, Cam Jurgens, and A.J. Brown all suffered injuries in Week 18. DeVonta Smith sat out the brutal loss against the New York Giants in Week 18. Nick Sirianni is desperate for a playoff victory. He hopes to have a healthy lineup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Eagles Facing Adversity
The Eagles are reeling badly. They lost five of their final six games to finish the 2023 regular season. The fan base has no optimism heading into the playoffs just one month after the team sat at 10-1 in sole possession of the best record in the NFL.
Nobody can confidently say the Eagles have any momentum heading into the playoffs. They lost consecutive games to finish the regular season against opponents in the bottom tier of the NFL with nothing to play for. The Eagles struggled with the same weaknesses throughout the 2023 season, and their recent opponents have exposed their flaws brutally.
Philadelphia Eagles NFC Wild Card Round Starters
Darius Slay will likely return after missing the final four games of the regular season after arthroscopic knee surgery. Kelee Ringo and Eli Ricks will still rotate into the defensive backfield after filling in for Slay the past four games. Sydney Brown is unavailable after a serious injury in Week 18.
DeVonta Smith is nursing an ankle injury suffered in the fourth quarter against the Cardinals in Week 17. D'Andre Swift also sat out the loss against the Giants. Both should also return against the Buccaneers.
Cam Jurgens suffered an eye injury against the Giants. His status is still in question. All eyes will turn to A.J. Brown. Assuming Jalen Hurts plays through a dislocated finger, Brown's status will be the most impactful is the most significant of any injury news.
