97.5 The Fanatic Flyers Roundup: Cutter Gauthier at World Juniors
The nine-game point streak might be over, but the Philadelphia Flyers still occupy a playoff position.
According to NBC Sports Philadelphia, over 84% of NHL teams that occupied a playoff position on Christmas Eve since the league expanded to a 16-team playoff format in 1979-80 have made the postseason.
Meanwhile, Cutter Gauthier will spend his holiday in Sweden at the World Juniors. Other than unrealistic social media rumors about trades for Johnny Gaudreau or Claude Giroux, there isn’t much to complain about for the moment in Philadelphia.
- Saturday 12/16: Flyers 1, Detroit Red Wings 0

- Thursday 12/21: Nashville Predators 4, Flyers 2
Cutter Gauthier, Oliver Bonk at World Juniors
The good news isn’t limited to the NHL level. Cutter Gauthier and Oliver Bonk, drafted by the Flyers in the first round of the past two drafts, will compete at the World Junior Championships in Sweden from Dec. 26-Jan. 5. The annual holiday tradition showcases the sport’s top prospects in a highly competitive international setting.
The Flyers drafted Gauthier with the fifth-overall pick in 2022. The 6-foot-2 sharpshooter sits tied for second in the NCAA with 13 goals this season. He’s helped the Boston College Eagles to a 13-3-1 record and the number-one overall ranking.
Gauthier scored four goals and added six assists in seven games in last year’s tournament. Team USA won the bronze medal. His best showing at the international level came over the summer at the World Championship, a tournament with established NHL players on most rosters. He scored seven goals to help the Americans to another bronze medal.
Team USA named seven BC Eagles to the roster, including Gauthier and 2023 first-round picks Gabe Perreault (Rangers), Will Smith (Sharks), and Ryan Leonard (Capitals).

The Flyers drafted Bonk with the 22nd-overall pick in 2023. A strong two-way performance this season helped him earn him a spot on Team Canada. The defenseman has recorded six goals and 24 assists in 28 games this season with the London Knights of the OHL.
Keith Jones has a close relationship with long-time teammate Dale Hunter, who has built London into one of the most reputable junior programs in the world. The connection helped the Flyers stay confident in the proper environment to facilitate Bonk’s development.
The IIHF will not allow Russia to compete. The unfortunate reality of world politics therefore prevents Philadelphia’s top prospect Matvei Michkov from playing in the tournament.
Owen Tippett Robs Hughes Brothers in OT
Jack and Luke Hughes have emerged as two franchise centerpieces for the Devils, a team that broke out for 112 points and a playoff series win last season.
When Jack fed Luke for an overtime game-winner against the Flyers on Nov. 30, fans at the Wells Fargo Center weren’t in the mood to hear about a heartwarming moment between two brothers in the NHL. Owen Tippett, however, soon returned the favor.
The Flyers and the Devils needed overtime to decide their matchup on Tuesday night also. When Jack tried a drop pass to his younger brother, Tippett intercepted and flew in for a breakaway goal to send the Flyers away with a win. His 11th of the season tied him with Joel Farabee for second on the team.

Sam Ersson
Goaltending has been a key element to the early-season success, but don’t give all the credit to Carter Hart. The expected franchise goalie hasn’t played since Dec. 9.
Sam Ersson has stepped into the crease for five consecutive starts. The 24-year-old Swede has rebounded from a slow start to 2023-24. He’s 7-1-1 with two shutouts in his last nine games, and he’s allowed only 19 goals during that stretch.
Hart will likely return against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday. However, John Tortorella has two good options between the pipes.
Looking Ahead
A quick trip to Detroit will send the Flyers into the NHL’s Christmas break. They’ll pick back up with the annual “Disney On Ice” road trip until Jan. 4 while The Mouse occupies the Wells Fargo Center.
