The Inaugural Big 5 Classic: Everything You Need To Know
The Big 5 will open a new chapter in its storied history in 2023. The Inaugural MHS Lift Big 5 Classic will take place on Saturday, Dec. 2 at the Wells Fargo Center.
Temple, Penn, Saint Joseph’s, LaSalle, and Villanova will welcome Drexel as the sixth team to compete in the triple-header. 97.5 The Fanatic has hosted guests excited for the modernized version of a round-robin tournament that began in 1954.
Triple-Header at the Wells Fargo Center
Saint Joe’s and Temple earned their spots in the Big 5 championship game with thrilling victories on Wednesday night. SJU defeated Villanova in the “Holy War” for the first time since 2011. The Owls took down their North Philly neighbors the LaSalle Explorers in triple overtime.
Penn will face off against LaSalle for third place. Kyle Neptune and the Villanova Wildcats limped through disappointing losses against Penn and Saint Joe’s to slip into the fifth-place game against Drexel. The first game will tip off at 2pm. NBC Sports Philadelphia and Peacock will carry all three games.
Philadelphia media legends Dick Jerardi and Mike Kern will also enter the Big 5 Hall of Fame for their work as writers for the Philadelphia Daily News.
Adam Fisher- Temple Men’s Basketball Head Coach
Temple head coach Adam Fisher joined The John Kincade Show to discuss the Owls’ season so far, his appreciation for the history of the Big 5, and his roots in the Philadelphia area. He emphatically spoke about his passion for local bragging rights and supremacy in the Philadelphia basketball scene.
“It’s unique. Unless you’re here, you don’t really understand it, and that’s what we’ve really tried to educate our guys about the Big 5. We’ve shown videos of the history. It’s going to be a battle. Every game in the Big 5 is like an NCAA Tournament game to me.” -Adam Fisher
The Bucks County native knows there is nothing quite like a classic event in Philly sports.
“Who else does that across the country? There’s nobody. It’s unique. It’s special to this city, so we’re fired up for it.” -Fisher
Jameer Nelson- Legendary St. Joe’s Hawk
Former Naismith National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson spoke with Andrew Salciunas on 97.5 The Fanatic about the changes made to the Big 5 rivalries.
“A lot of people talk about the history of the Big 5. Obviously, they’re trying to get back to where it was, I guess (to) stay sustainable… I’m enthused about it. I want to see what happens and what comes out of it.” -Jameer Nelson
Nelson still holds the nostalgia for the 2004 undefeated season on Hawk Hill. After all, he did earn the title as “the little man from the little school that’s beating everyone” on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
However, he acknowledged one downside of the Big 5 matchups during his college career.
“There was too much time in between, so the buzz would kind of die off a little bit, but now(it’s) a one-day, tournament-type style event. It should be a lot of buzz. It should gain a lot of traction.” -Nelson
The Big 5 purists (understandably) might not want to leave the Palestra, “The Cathedral of College Basketball” and the best sports venue in Philadelphia. However, the double-header format at the Palestra in 2022 didn’t draw the buzz that the universities hoped for. The new event format aims to expand the reach and ultimately bring the tradition back to the stage.
Come out to the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday for the Big 5 Classic to support your alma mater and watch a competitive triple-header integral to the tradition of Philadelphia sports. Tickets are on sale now.
