Kyle Schwarber exits Phillies’ game vs. Blue Jays with left foot contusion
Kyle Schwarber exited Tuesday’s game between the Phillies and Blue Jays after fouling a ball off of his left foot in the sixth inning.
X-rays were negative and the Phillies called it a left foot contusion.
Schwarber was in considerable pain after the foul ball hit him directly in the foot without appearing to lose much speed. He was visited by manager Rob Thomson and Phillies trainers but stayed in the game after walking it off. He flied out to right field on the next pitch.
The Phillies lifted Schwarber for Dalton Guthrie. They led by three runs at the time and were likely to deploy Guthrie as a defensive replacement at some point in the final three innings either way.
Schwarber was coming off his first multi-hit game in nearly three weeks. He hit an RBI single and a two-run home run Sunday, also walking. He walked and scored in the fourth inning Tuesday on Nick Castellanos’ two-run homer.
This is not a good time to have a hobbled Schwarber. After their quick two-game series against the Blue Jays, the Phillies head to Colorado and San Francisco, two spacious outfields where teams can pick up extra bases on slow-footed outfielders. Schwarber played costly defense at Dodger Stadium last week when the Phils were swept. They can no longer hide him in the designated hitter spot, where he spent 18 of his first 28 starts, with Bryce Harper occupying it every day.
