Eagles add Ronell Williams to defensive staff under Sean Desai; report
With NFL free agency underway, the Eagles are continuing to fill out their new-look coaching staff.
The Eagles hiring defensive assistant Ronell Williams as their nickels coach under Sean Desai, ESPNs Courtney Cronin reported.
The title of nickels coach is a new one but the position of nickel cornerback is a unique one in the defensive backfield. The Eagles previous defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson has moved on to Baltimore after the Eagles elected to go in a different direction for the defensive coordinator position.
Wilsons assistant defensive backs coach D.K. McDonald has a longstanding relationship with Nick Sirianni and is still listed on the teams website. Perhaps hell return in an expanded role.
Williams had been with the Bears since 2018, which means he worked under Desai before. Desai was the Bears safety coach in 2019-20 but became their defensive coordinator in 2021. Desai spent last season with the Seahawks.
In addition to his ties to Desai, Williams also has local connections in Philly. Williams is a Chester, Pennsylvania, native and was a four-year letterman at West Chester University. He was a first-team Division II All-American middle linebacker.
After his playing career was over, Williams coached at Widener University and then ended up at Temple as a graduate and then as a defensive analyst for a few seasons before landing in Chicago.
