Eagles unsure if Dennard Wilson will return after finding DC elsewhere
INDIANAPOLIS The Eagles on Tuesday finalized a deal to make Sean Desai their next defensive coordinator.
Now they have to figure out what that means for Dennard Wilson.
Because Wilson, the Eagles defensive backs coach, was considered to be one of the top candidates for the job left vacant when Jonathan Gannon was hired as the Cardinals head coach. And the Eagles passed Wilson over to make a hire from outside the building.
Obviously, well go through that as we continue on, Sirianni said at the combine, just minutes after the Eagles announced that a deal was in place with Desai.
Does the staff dynamic fit? Does Sean have anybody? But Dennard is a great football coach. He has done an outstanding job. If hes still our defensive backs coach, well be lucky to have him because we know how good of a coach he is. But were not to that process yet.
Wilson, 40, spent the last two seasons with the Eagles as their defensive backs coach after previously holding that position with the Jets and Rams. He was a strong candidate to replace Gannon.
Given the internal support Wilson got from his players during this process, it could lead to a tricky situation if he were to return under the defensive coordinator the Eagles hired instead of him.
The Eagles announced several of their staff changes on Tuesday, including the hirings of Desai and the promotion of QBs coach Brian Johnson to offensive coordinator. But given the outside hire at DC, the defensive staff is not yet solidified. And former linebackers coach Nick Rallis has left to become the DC under Gannon in Arizona so that spot is vacant too.
So well find out in the coming weeks if Wilson will return.
We just kind of finalized that Sean will be our defensive coordinator, Sirianni said. So were not there yet but I think the world of Dennard and how good of a football coach he is.
