Interesting timing for Phillies to make prospect Mickey Moniak eligible for a trade
The Phillies on Sunday added outfield prospect Mickey Moniak to their 60-man player pool.
The timing of the move is interesting because it comes a day before the trade deadline and only players in the 60-man pool are eligible to be immediately traded. A player can still be included in a deal down the road, as a player to be named later, but there are risks associated with that. With a month of season remaining, an acquiring team might want a player like Moniak in its camp at immediate disposal.
It’s possible, however, that Moniak’s being added to the 60-man pool has nothing to do with a trade. He had been rehabbing a minor knee injury in Clearwater and is simply ready to ramp up his activity at the Phillies’ satellite camp in Lehigh Valley.
Moniak, 22, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 draft. He hit .252/11/67 with a .741 OPS at Double A Reading in 2019.
The Phillies, thirsty to make the playoffs for the first time since 2011, traded for three relievers last week and are still looking to upgrade their pitching before Monday afternoon’s deadline. There are a number of pitchers who could be attractive to the Phils. There was a lot of buzz Sunday about the Phils being one of the teams involved in talks with Milwaukee for All-Star lefty reliever Josh Hader, who still has three more years of team control after this season. The price on Hader would be very, very high. That name, along with others, could be worth watching.
