Phillies offense has been MLB’s best in the 1st inning
The Phillies have had the best offense in baseball in the first inning this season, a trend that would feel more recognizable if not for so many blown leads.
The Phils scored again in the first inning Saturday after Andrew McCutchen singled, advanced to third via a passed ball and a flyout, and scored on Bryce Harper’s sacrifice fly.
It was the 25th run scored by the Phillies in the first inning of their 28 games. That is tops in the NL, with the Dodgers next at 20.
The Phillies have hit .310 in the first inning, which also leads the majors. Their .404 first-inning on-base percentage leads the majors by 10 points. Their .923 OPS leads by 21 points.
Harper has been the Phillies’ most productive player in the opening frame, hitting .381 with 4 HR and 10 RBI.
Rhys Hoskins has gone 6 for 19 (.353) and reached base in 15 of 28 plate appearances. Both Hoskins and Harper have scored six runs in the first inning.
Andrew McCutchen has reached base to lead off the first inning in three of the last four games. He’s been squaring the ball up for two weeks now, hitting .367 with 10 runs and 13 RBI in his last 12 games.
J.T. Realmuto has actually done the least of the group in the first inning, going 2 for 15 with a homer and three RBI.
The Phillies have scored first in 19 of their 28 games. Through Saturday, they had gone 8-10 in those games.
