David Robertson out for season, done with Phillies
The Phillies had hoped that David Robertson, a stalwart at the back of the bullpen during 11 seasons in the American League, would be a major contributor to their team when they signed him to a two-year, $23 million contract before the 2019 season.
For their investment, the Phillies got just 6⅔ innings.
Robertson’s time with the Phillies is essentially over.
He suffered a recent setback in his recovery from elbow surgery and has been told to stop throwing for six weeks, manager Joe Girardi said Saturday.
That means his season is over. The right-hander, who will turn 36 in April, will be a free agent this offseason.
Robertson injured his right elbow early in 2019. He pitched in just seven games then was shut down and had Tommy John surgery in August 2019. Robertson had been progressing well and was hoping to join the Phillies in September before his setback.
While Robertson is out of the picture for a September return, lefty Ranger Suarez is very much in the picture.
Suarez pitched well out of the bullpen last year but missed the start of this season while in COVID-19 protocol. He is close to being ready and Girardi indicated he could be activated very soon.
