DeLand’s Eastside Park Renamed After Tra Thomas
The City of DeLand renamed Eastside Park and Playground for Tra Thomas, a DeLand High School graduate.
The former Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman and other half of Farzetta & Tra In The Morning was the keynote speaker at Monday’s event honoring Martin Luther King Jr. and was present the day before for the unveiling of the new park name.
Thomas was involved with the local community of DeLand during his football career and after his retirement. He helped fun a nonprofit outreach ministry called Our Daily Bread that provides groceries, clothing, and Christmas and utility bill help. Thomas also paid off his church’s mortgage, purchased a bus for his church, and bought books for the Tra Thomas Book Club with the Boys & Girls Club or DeLand, the DeLand Library, and the Chisholm Community Center.
Tra says ” It was awesome having the park where I grew up and where I celebrated being drafted into the NFL named after me. I would like to thank my parents, William and Ethel Thomas, the City of DeLand and the community for this honor.”
