Eagles Training Camp Is Not As Exciting As It Used To Be
We are now less than 2 weeks away from Eagles’ training camp and I am not feeling the usual excitement. Everyone is excited for the season of course. The Eagles have new coaches, a new powerful offense, and youth on defense. I am speaking solely about training camp. 1 generation ago, the start of camp was like a holiday. People scheduled their summer vacations around it and made the pilgrimage to Lehigh. That era is over, and it feels like little by little the anticipation has dropped off.
Again, I am not suggesting that Eagles’ fans aren’t as passionate as they used to be. The Super Bowl win did calm some for a few years, but last year’s collapse has the fire burning as hot as it has ever been. This is about the fact that there is nothing to experience with training camp anymore.
Eagles Training Camp Is No Longer An Experience
The Eagles have taken training camp away from the fans and with that interest seems to be waning. Interest in the games have not dropped yet, but the training camp excitement seems to have died completely. What the Eagles do isn’t the norm across the NFL either. Many NFL teams still think that fans should have access to training camp.
The Eagles will do 1 open practice this year that isn’t really even a practice. Meanwhile, the closest team to our south, the Baltimore Ravens, will have 20 open practices this year. Doug Pederson who used to have 2 or 1 open when he coached here, will have 15 open practices this year with the Jaguars. They even allow the fans to watch their two open intersquad practices with the Bucs. I would imagine that those fans are counting the days to camp the way that we used to.
Jeff Lurie has proven to be a very good owner in his time in Philadelphia. He isn’t perfect though and while the JJ Arcega-Whiteside pick he made was poor, taking training camp from the fans is far worse. I am likely being too “get off my lawn” right now, but it bothers me this time of year. The plan is soon for Julian Lurie to take over operations. I hope the first thing he does is inject fun back into Eagles training camp for the fans.
