The Phillies Must Go All-In At The Trade Deadline For 2024
We are 3 weeks away from the MLB trade deadline and the Phillies remain the best team in baseball. They aren’t a perfect team though and clearly upgrades could be made. I think everyone will agree on that. What upgrades and at what cost is where the disagreements will come into play. I say that they need to do all they can to secure the World Series at this deadline, and I don’t care about the cost. Prospects must be made available to get what they need.
What The Phillies Need At The Deadline
I love the Phillies’ pitching. I think they are equipped to have a better playoff rotation and bullpen than any team they will see. People like to throw around that you can’t have enough bullpen arms, but that should not be the Phillies’ top priority.
The biggest priority is finding a right-handed outfield bat that is reliable. It is their biggest need, but the hardest of their issues to be fixed. The Phillies don’t just need a body, they need a big-time player, and it takes two teams to make a deal. Again, that is why you can’t be stingy with prospects this trade deadline.
Replacing Whit Merrifield should also be a top priority. He is currently batting below .200 and hasn’t had an extra base hit for more than a month for the price of $7 million. He has stolen as much as Tobias Harris ever has. I don’t care that he “can play multiple positions”. He can’t hit anymore at any of them. They can easily replace him without giving up anything.
Then we must watch Bryson Stott & see if he can turn his season around or if they need to make a short term move at 2nd base. The fan favorite has only had 2 good weeks this season. He has batted just .240 this season and has struggled against the fastball. Is he your future leadoff hitter or future 8-hole hitter? So far, it’s been the latter.

If a short-term right-handed infielder is available, they may need to consider it. That player could take Merrifield’s roster spot.
Now Is The Time To Go All-In
There are some, like John Kincade from Kincade and Salciunas in the morning, who think that they should make certain prospects like Andrew Painter or Aiden Miller untouchable. I disagree with that.
I don’t know when the stars will align this well for the Phillies again. The starting pitching, bullpen, and lineup are very good. They aren’t perfect though. Adding a top player at their weakest spot is only the way to go.
