In The Post: Sixers 104, Raptors 101
Philadelphia and Toronto needed overtime to settle this Monday night matchup with the 76ers prevailing, 104-101. The faceoff lived up to the usual games we get from these two rivals when they square off. The Sixers are on a five-game winning streak, and the Raptors have now lost six in a row. Here is what we saw:
- An interesting offensive foul call on PJ Tucker at the 1:31 mark in overtime with the Sixers up three. Tobias Harris received the ball in the corner and rose for a corner three that went in with the Raptors Scottie Barnes called for the foul. But, Toronto head coach Nick Nurse successfully challenged the initial call that Barnes was pushed into Harris by Tucker. The officials overturned the call taking away the Harris made basket. A lot of offensive foul calls late on both sides.
- Paschal Siakam is still a tough cover for the Sixers. He was able to score on midrange jumpers, drives to the basket, and threes. Siakam simply had his way, dropping 16 in the third. He helped his team overcome an 11-point halftime deficit to even the score. He finished the night with a game-high 38 points but was scoreless in the overtime session on three-shot attempts.
- Sixers guard De’Anthony Melton had a tough shooting night but hit two three-pointers in the fourth quarter when the team desperately needed the points. He ended the night with eight points, going 3 for 14 from the field and 2 for 11 from deep.
- Toronto was able to use their zone defense to try and slow down Philadelphia’s scoring after using a 17-4 run in the second quarter. With the Raptors going small for much of the night, they decided to pack it in and not allow Embiid to go off without help. Also closed out hard on the three-point shooters.
- This one was truly a game of runs. Two separate 11-0 runs by Philadelphia and Toronto in the first quarter with the Raptors using theirs to come back and take a one-point lead after one. The Sixers then used a 17-4 run early in the second to retake the lead and a 57-46 advantage at the half. Toronto also had 19-1 run to take a seven-point lead early in the fourth – only to have the 76ers use a late 8-0 run for a one-point lead. Game of runs.
The Sixers are 5-0 during their seven-game homestand with two more games remaining. Next up will be the 8-24 Detroit Pistons on Wednesday.
