Can The Eagles Have Two 1,000 Yard WRs?
It’s not crazy. It’s difficult but certainly not crazy. Last year and this number might shock you but 23 WR’s and 3 TE’s in the NFL went over 1,000 yards. With 3 pairs of WR’s being teammates in Chris Godwin and Mike Evans in Tampa Bay, Tee Higgins and JaMarr Chase in Cincy and Mike Williams and Keenan Allen in LA all surpassing 1,000 yards. Can AJ Brown and Devonta Smith both reach that milestone? AJ had 869 yards in 13 games with the Titans last year, while DeVonta had 916 yards in 17 games. Both are right on the doorstep of being in rare company in the NFL. If you took Tyreek Hill and teamed him with Jaylen Waddle last year, they would’ve made the 4th set of teammates to go over 1K! Theoretically there could be five teams this year and I believe the Eagles have a chance to be one of them. Christian Kirk and DK Metcalf just missed the mark as well. There’s a chance that up to 30 WR’s this season could approach 1,000 yards with the addition of a 17th game.
If you extrapolated Brown’s YPG over 17 games last year, he gets there easily. DeVonta theoretically should get better in year two, especially with the presence of AJ Brown most likely drawing the opponents #1 CB, thus leaving Smith with the teams #2 option. Can’t double bracket Smith like opponents did last year, that with his QB probably taking a step forward this year, should add to more success on the field for Smith. And for those with concerns about the Eagles run heavy offense, AJ is coming from a run heavy offense in Tennessee with Derrick Henry being the focal point of that offense.
Now if you doubt they can do that, it’s a perfectly logical thought to have. 1- can Jalen Hurts air it out enough to get both WR’s to that level? It’s a fair question. 2- if you believe Dallas Goedert can approach 1,000 yards this year as the primary TE option, can Hurts get 3 guys to 1,000 yards? 3- Quez Watkins was the teams deep threat last year and had nearly 650 yards last season and should also improve on those numbers? 4- What’s Miles Sanders and the other RB’s role in the passing game? A lot of questions of if there’s enough ball to go around, but that’s a good problem to have because it means they have weapons.
Jalen Hurts had roughly 3,200 yards last year in 16 games and a couple of those with a hurt ankle, can he approach 4,000 this year? I don’t see why not, so let’s say he gets 3,800 yards this year, could 3,000 of those yards come from his top 3 options? Let’s find out, footballs almost here!
As always, Go Birds.
