BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - MAY 01: Marcus Smart #36 of the Boston Celtics dribbles against Paul Reed #44 of the Philadelphia 76ers during the second half in game one of the Eastern Conference Second Round Playoffs at TD Garden on May 01, 2023 in Boston, Massachusetts.

For many Philly fans, the hate they feel for the Boston Celtics is right up there with the hate they feel for the Cowboys. And you could certainly count Anthony Gargano among those fans. For months, even before we knew it would be Sixers-Celtics in the playoffs, he has been obsessing about the potential of a Sixers-Celtics matchup in the playoffs this year.

Here is what Anthony was saying back on April 19th when the playoffs had just started.

“And watching them last night… oof… they are good. It drives me insane. They are good. Now I think the Sixers are playing terrific. When they are playing altogether, the matchup is there. I think it is going to be a great epic series. They have a chance to win it. It’s a coin flip. But that just makes me even more neurotic. Because I think it can be that incredible of theater of Sixers and Celtics. It’s all I am thinking about. I went to that game over the Phillies…”

Now it is finally here. And this Celtics team is proving to be just as hatable as they were with past Sixers teams. Which had Anthony thinking, who are his most hated Celtics of all time? Going from the Bill Russell era to the team the Sixers are currently battling within the 2nd round. Anthony read out his list on the air. But if you missed that, you can still see which Boston Celtics he hates the most right here.

  • 41-36

    41) Kendrick Perkins

    40) Ray Allen

    39) Popeye Nones

    38) Jayson Tatum

    37) Dee Brown

    36) Kevin Garnett

From 41-36, a lot of names from the 2000s-era Celtics came up. Id imagine one of the reasons they are not as hated and lower on the list, is the Sixers were not as competitive during the height of those guys’ careers with the Celtics. The one exception is Tatum, who obviously they are facing now. After Anthony once threatened to boycott a whole brand of chips after they put Tatum on the packaging, you would have thought hed be higher on this list.

Kendrick Perkins was originally left off the list, but someone reminded him about his occasional Embiid hating, so Anthony made sure to add him at 41.

  • 14) Rajon Rondo

The most hated member for Anthony of those 2000s-era Celtics with the big 4. Probably also doesn’t help that Ben Simmons got so many comparisons to Rajon Rondo.

  • 13) Bob Cousey

Anyone responsible for helping get the city of Boston 6 Championships is going to be hated.

  • 12) Dennis Johnson

Yet another member of that Larry Bird era Celtics team. You will see a lot of them on Anthony’s list.

  • 11) Robert Parrish

Youseeing the pattern yet? Another 80s-era Celtics player, helped them win 4 rings and beat the Sixers in the ECF multiple times. Didnt help that he was also pretty damn good, making the All-Star game nearly every season with the Celtics.

  • 09) Cedric Maxwell

The feeling between Maxwell and Sixers fans seems to be mutual, given he once went into the stands to try and fight some Sixers fans.

  • 08) Kevin McHale

You will start to notice a pattern, all the major pieces on those Celtics teams the Dr J Sixers used to always square off with, rank very highly on this list. That of course includes Kevin McHale, who comes in at 8th on Anthony’s list, after winning 3 NBA Finals with Boston while playing with them from 1980 until 1993.

  • 07) Bill Russell

Bill Russell is the reason Celtics fans can brag about having so many rings. So even though he is an All-Time great, he has to go on this list given how insufferable his success has made Celtics fans.

  • 06) Marcus Smart

You saw Smart doing dirty little tricks, like sliding his foot under Harden so he had now where to land. Somehow got away with it though. If Smart was a Sixer, he’d likely be a fan favorite. But since he plays for the Celtics, he is going to rank very highly on any hate the face the list.

  • 05) Al Horford

Not only is Horford annoying in a Celtics jersey. but the one season he decided to suck was the one when he was wearing a Sixers jersey. He also comes along with one of the most annoying family members we have ever seen a Philly athlete have in his sister Anna. All around, Al Horford won’t be winning any popularity contests in Philly, which is why he ranks so high on Anthony’s hate list.

  • 04) ML Carr

The Marcus Smart of those 70’s and 80s Celtics teams. His pesky defense is a big reason why the Sixers lost several Eastern Conference Finals to the Celtics. He also went on to be the Celtics.

  • 03) Red Auerbach

The longtime Celtics coach and later GM was the source of a lot of grief for Sixers fans. He helped create two different dynasties for the Celtics. One as a coach in the 60s, and another as an Executive in the 70s and 80s.

  • 02) Danny Ainge

He was annoying enough as a player. But then he became GM, fleeced the Colangelos by trading the Sixers the first overall pick so we could get Markelle Fultz, and then draft Jayson Tatum with what was the Sixers’ pick, who turned into an MVP candidate.

  • 01) Larry Bird

No one else could have been number 1 on this list. The Bird vs Dr. J era was the height of the Sixers-Celtics rivalry, and Larry Bird eliminated the Sixers way too often.
