The Eagles regular season is over. They closed things out by watching their backups beat the Giants and finished 14-3 and in the 2 seed. They now await the Packers this Sunday at 4:30 pm, and we will see where their season goes from there.

But before we move on to the playoffs, let’s take a moment to appreciate how impressive this regular season was. Very few people saw this coming, especially after last season. To go from losing 6 of your last 7 games, and speculation that the head coach would be fired, to 14-3, is an impressive feat. Several talking heads from around the league picked the Eagles to miss the playoffs period, and now you could argue they are the best team in the league.

Eagles Start Slow, But Finish Hot

It got off to a slow start. 2-2 going into the bye, with the final game being a blowout loss down in Tampa. At that point, people were close to panicking. Even beating the Browns coming off the bye did nothing to calm people’s nerves. But they just kept winning. They lost just 1 game after that bye week, and that was with Jalen Hurts being knocked out of the game with a concussion.

There were some speed bumps. Nick Sirianni was raked over the coals for his decision-making vs the Jaguars. They won the game, but him leaving points on the board made a game that should have been a blowout close. Then there was the Panthers game that sparkled a huge debate about the passing game.

They kept answering the call though. After that Panthers game, and the comments by AJ Brown and Brandon Graham, the Eagles proved they could beat teams through the air by beating the Steelers through the air. Sirianni’s decision-making was never much of an issue again after the Jaguars.

But just how good of a team are they? Are we underrating how great they have been? Let’s dive into the numbers.

These 6 Numbers Show Just How Impressive The Eagles Have Been:

  • 151.6

The Eagles had one of the worst secondaries in the league last year. They were second to last in both yards allowed per game, and TDs allowed. Understandably the secondary was completely revamped. Only 2 of the 5 starters, Darius Slay and Reed Blankenship are still starters for the Eagles. They brought back CJ Gardner Johnson and also drafted Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. Relying that much on rookies can be dangerous, but you can’t argue with the results.

The Eagles finished the season number 1 in the league by allowing just 174.2 yards per game. But honestly, it is better than that. Because for the first 4 weeks, they still had Avonte Maddox at nickel, and with that setup, they allowed 247.5 yards per game. But since Cooper DeJean took over, they are allowing just 151.6 yards per game through the air. And in that time they played the number 1, number 7, number 10, and number 11 pass offenses. They held those teams to 180.2 passing yards per game. That includes Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, and Matt Stafford by the way. All of whom were kept in check by this secondary.

Oh and on top of all that, Cooper DeJean was able to do this to Derrick Henry. He did something similar to Ja’Marr Chase.

  • 33%

It is not just the pass defense that has been great. They are 9th in yards allowed per rush, and 10th in rushing yards allowed per game. But diving deeper into the advanced numbers might show they are even better than that. They are 3rd in run-stop win rate at 33%, and 1st in Defensive EPA per carry. They have also allowed only 9 rushing TDs.

They played the number 1, number 3, and number 11 rushing offenses in the league. The number 3 team, the Commanders, they played twice. They gave up 418 total rushing yards in those 4 games, but only 219 of those yards were given up to RBs. All season, they have given up 79.8 yards per game to RBs. Mobile QBs give them some trouble, but RBs have mostly been shut down. They faced Derrick Henry, the 2nd best back in the league, and held him to 82 yards and 4.3 yards per carry. Both Nakobe Dean and Zack Baun rank in the top 7 in run-stop win rate.

  • +171

As we all know, the Eagles are 12-1 since the bye week. But they didn’t just win games, they mostly dominated in games. They won 8 of those 13 games by at least a TD. They won 6 by double digits. Their point differential in that time is +171. Only the Lions have a better point differential overall, +222, and they are +204 in that same period. But the Lions are also a team that actively tries to run up the score, whereas the Eagles pulled their starters multiple times, took their foot off the gas several others, and played none of their starters in that final game.

It was not just vs bad teams either. They beat the Ravens, Rams, Steelers, and Packers, and split with the Commanders. That loss to the Commanders was without Jalen Hurts.

Obviously Saquon Barkley is great. He became just the 9th ever 2000-yard rusher and could have broken the All-Time record if the Eagles played their starters in week 18. But what really helps separate him is his penchant for big plays. Barkley has the most 10+ yard runs with 46, the most 30+ yard runs with 10, the most 40+ yard runs with 7, and the most 50+ yard runs with 6.

He can break a game open at any moment. Even in games where he struggled to get going, all it takes is one play to turn the entire game on its head. That is part of what they were missing before. Swift and Sanders were solid backs for them. But they lacked the game-breaking ability Barkley now provides.

  • 3.8

Sticking with the run game, let’s give the line some credit too. Of Barkley’s 2005 yards, 1328 came before he was even touched. He gets 3.8 yards per carry before contact, the most in the league for anyone with at least 50 carries. Barkley hits the holes and explodes better than anyone, but the O-Line makes sure those running lanes are open for him. It is the perfect marriage. The best run-blocking O-Line, and the best runningback, come together to make a running game no one can stop. Throw in Hurts’ ability to scramble, there is a reason they are up there with the Ravens as one of the league’s best run games.

Credit also goes to the Eagles’ skill players who have been willing and able blockers all season.

The Eagles passing game took a bit of a backseat this season. Because they run it so well, there were weeks where they barely had to pass, which explains why many of the counting stats are down despite the offense being so good. But when you take volume out of it, the Eagles’ passing game is still very good.

Take AJ Brown. Among WRs who played at least 4 games, he is 2nd in the league with 2.99 yards per route run. Devonta Smith is 21st at 2.11 Yards Per Route Run. Both guys are still dynamic WRs, and Hurts is very good at getting it to them. We learned vs the Steelers that if they have to throw, they can, even against very good secondaries. But it has not always called for it. The run game is that good. But the threat of the passing game helps the run game. AJ Brown is rarely in single coverage, because when he is single-covered covered he wins. Other teams have not been able to bring the safety up to help vs the run, because they need that safety back to stop AJ Brown and Devonta Smith. In the one game they brought them up, the Eagles torched the Steelers through the air.
