The Best Show Ever?: Weekdays 2pm – 6pm

DENVER, COLORADO - AUGUST 18: Josh Jacobs #8 of the Green Bay Packers warms up against the Denver Broncos before a preseason game at Empower Field At Mile High on August 18, 2024 in Denver, Colorado.

Week 1 is here. This Friday, the Eagles open up their season vs the Green Bay Packers. A tough match-up right out of the gate. Green Bay is one of the few teams in the running for the top seed in the NFC, along with the Eagles, Lions, Niners, and maybe the Cowboys.

When we learned the Packers would get a home game vs the Packers, it felt like an advantage. But it was not meant to be. The Packers were selected to be the team the Eagles play in Brazil. It is still technically a “home” game. But it is a home game that takes place 4,754 miles away from Philly, in a foreign country, and in a different time zone. They have to travel nearly 10 hours via plane to this “home game”.

But gripes about losing that home game aside, it is a tough matchup. Green Bay emerged as one of the best NFC teams last year, despite the slow start. They were on fire in the second half and eventually pummelled the Cowboys in the playoffs, but then blew a late lead to the Niners in the next round.

Now they are expected to carry that success into 2024. The Eagles are the first team in their way, whose season went the exact opposite direction as Green Bay last year. They started 10-1, then fell apart in the 2nd half, eventually getting blown out by the Bucs in the playoffs.

So what do the Eagles need to watch out for vs the Packers? Which players could give them a tough time? We already looked at the Eagles who might have big games vs the Packers, so now let’s look at some Green Bay players who could have big games vs the Eagles.

Here are 4 Packers Players Who Might Give The Eagles Trouble In Week 1

  • Josh Jacobs

Jacobs had a slightly down year in 2023. After having 4.9 yards per carry in 2022, it fell to 3.5 last season as he battled injuries. But he is only a year removed from being arguably the best RB in the league, with 1,653 yards in 2022.

The Eagles’ interior line, as long as they are conditioned, is great vs the run with Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter. The linebackers are another question. We just learned that Devin White will miss week 1, and might not have even played if he was healthy. Nakobe Dean has yet to prove anything, and Zack Baun has never played Linebacker.

Being concerned about the LB group would be fair, given how unproven they are. And they get a tough test in Josh Jacobs week 1, who is also capable of catching the ball in space.

  • Jordan Love

Love is getting more hype than almost any young QB in the league. He struggled in the first half of 2023 but was elite to close out the season. The Packers quickly made him the richest player in the NFL, and now he carries lofty expectations into 2024.

Meanwhile, the Eagles overhauled their secondary. With Quinyon Mitchel and Isaiah Rodgers now on the field, and Darius Slay healthy, they could be a great group. They also added CJ Gardner Johnson at Safety. But they get a tough test in week 1, with a great young QB. And while he lacks the elite weapons Jalen Hurts has, he has a solid group of guys to target and is not picky about who he throws to.

Even if Mitchell shuts down Jayden Reed, Love has so many options the entire secondary will need to be on their game if they want to slow down the Green Bay defense.

  • Luke Musgrave

Luke is not yet a proven NFL player. He had an okay rookie season after the Packers took him in the 2nd round. But much like Jacobs has a chance to take advantage of a shaky Eagles LB group, so does Musgrave.

Tight Ends gave the Eagles a hard time last year. Will they do so again? It is not a super tough matchup in week 1, but there were worse Tight Ends who did well against the Eagles last year, so Luke Musgrave will make for an interesting first challenge in coverage for Nakobe Dean and Zack Baun.

  • Kenny Clark

Packers DT Kenny Clark made his 3rd Pro Bowl last year. Trying to stop him in week 1 will be Mekhi Becton playing his first snaps at RG.

Going from Tackle to G is no easy transition. Even if Becton ends up being great, there will be growing pains. It won’t help getting a tough matchup right out of the gate. Clark had 7.5 sacks last year. They also have a few other good guys along the line, including Rashawn Gary. But the Eagles Tackles should be able to rein the Edge Rushers in. It is the inside pressure, with 2 of the 5 spots being different, that will be something to watch on game night.
