Eagles Stumble After Losing Jalen Hurts Early, 1st Loss Since Bye
The run is over. After 10 straight wins, the Eagles finally lost a game. From the onset, I will mention the most important part of that loss, something the TV broadcast crew neglected throughout. The loss of Jalen Hurts.
The Eagles looked like they were on their way to a rout. They got a big 4th down stop on defense to start the game, easily went down the field to score a TD, and then forced another turnover the following drive. But then Jalen Hurts took a hit to the head. They sent him into the blue tent to get checked out, and Kenny Pickett went in. Soon enough Hurts went back into the locker room, and he never came back out.
Kenny Pickett actually started out well. He finished the drive Hurts started and even threw a TD. But it all went downhill from there.
His next drive he was picked off. Worse than that pick though, he garnered no respect from the Commanders D. Saquon Barkley faced stacked boxes every play, and outside of a 60-yard TD, was ineffective for most of the game. They dared Pickett to beat them, and he was not able to.
Eagles Defense Has It’s Worst Game Of The Season
The offense has an obvious excuse for its struggles. The drop at the end by Devonta Smith obviously can’t happen, but you can’t really blame them as a team for struggling with Kenny Pickett under center.
The defense does not have that same excuse though. Yes, they lost CJ Gardner Johnson. But losing 1 of your Safeties is not the same as losing your QB, and this was the defense’s worst game yet. Which is odd to say given the 5 turnovers they forced. But a complete implosion by them, 22 points allowed in the 4th quarter, turned a 2-score lead into a loss.
Quinyon Mitchell got burnt for his first TD of the season. The line lost contain of Jayden Daniels multiple times, letting him scramble for big gains, including 1 that converted a long 4th down. Finally, they let the Commanders easily move down the field to score the game-winning TD.
This defense looked like the best in the league for most of the season. But with Hurts out, the Eagles needed them to step up. They could not.
What Comes Next?
The NFC East is suddenly interesting. The Eagles need just 1 more win, or 1 more Commander’s loss. But with Hurts in concussion protocol, it is unclear if he will be available for the Cowboys game next week. If they lose that game, and the Commanders beat the Falcons, suddenly the Eagles would need to beat the Giants the final week.
Beating the Giants is not the concerning part. But the hope was that if the 1 seed was put out of reach by then, that they could use that game as a proto-bye week. Losing this game could cost them that chance. Speaking of the 1 seed, this in all likelihood cost them any chance at that. They will need to Lions to lose out, and the Vikings to lose this week, and next week, then beat the Lions.
