Johan Rojas Optioned Back To AAA After Phillies Activate Trea Turner
With Trea Turner close to a return, the question the past week has been who will the Phillies send down to make space for him. Names like Cristian Pache, David Dahl, and Whit Merrifield were brought up. Instead, it will be the guy who started the season as their Center Fielder who gets sent down. Johan Rojas.
Why Johan Rojas Was Sent Down
The problem for Rojas is he was the only guy who had any options left. Merrifield was never a realistic option with what he is paid, and Pache/ Dahl would have to go through waivers. The Phillies can safely send Rojas down, without risking someone else taking him. This way they maximize their depth in the OF
Rojas also has failed to live up to the hype he generated last season. We knew not to expect a lot from his bat. But the glove took a bit of a step back.
He was by no means a liability out there, but he was not the Gold Glove caliber fielder he was in 2023. The defensive metrics actually show Pache being a better fielder so far this season. If Rojas is not giving you elite defense, is his bat worth keeping in the lineup? The Phillies evidently didn’t think so.
Where The Phillies Go From Here
Since Johan Rojas still has options, we could see Rojas again down the road. But for now, the Phillies will keep Pache, Dahl, and Merrifield as their backup Outfielders. The idea of putting Edmundo Sosa out there has also been floated, but he has yet to get any work out there, so I am not sure how realistic that is.
Nick Castellanos will continue playing right every day, Brandon Marsh will likely see more time in centerfield, and could also play Left on days Pache is in Center, with Dahl sticking around to play sometimes in Left.
Johan Rojas currently has a slash line of .235/.271/.295/.566, with 2 HRs and 14 steals. Hopefully the trip down to AAA will help him find his swing, and help him fix the issues he has had in the field.

It should be said though that the numbers from Pache and Dahl are not much better. The best long term answer might be someone who is not currently on the team. The Phillies have been connected to several outfielders at the trade deadline. Expect them to be aggressive as they try to address one of the few weaknesses on this team.
