The Phillies Bullpen Is Already Fantastic, Numbers Don’t Lie
After Sunday’s loss, where Gregory Soto and Jose Alvarado both blew leads, there was some panic about the Phillies bullpen. They need to make a trade, people said. Jose Alvarado is not consistent, people also said.
The problem with this type of talk though, is it ignores reality. Outside of that one game, the Phillies bullpen has been as good as it gets. that’s not my opinion, it is an objective reality based on every single metric we judge bullpens by. The numbers don’t lie.
Don’t believe me? Let’s get into those numbers, and see just how good the Phillies Bullpen is.
Jose Alvarado Is Incredibly Consistent
Apparently, one bad outing makes Alvarado inconsistent, and hard to trust. But let’s actually look at what he has done this season.
The lefty has given up 11 earned runs this season. That doesn’t sound like a great season, but 7 came in just 2 games. 5 on opening day, 2 in London. otherwise, he has pitched 26.2 innings and gave up 4 runs.
It doesn’t get much more consistent than that. Even if you count London, that is an ERA of 1.93.
So he had 2 bad games and has otherwise been amazing. How is that inconsistent? People overreacted to 1 bad outing, when he hadn’t pitched in nearly a week, and obviously had to travel a long way.
Alvarado has been amazing this season. Panicking about 1 bad outing, compared to him having an ERA of 1.35 in his last 28 outings, is frankly dumb.

The Phillies Bullpen Is Fantastic
The bullpen got off to a shaky start. Opening Day was a disaster. Guys like Connor Brogdon, Nick Nelson, and Ricardo Pinto dragged them down early in April.
But if you just look at the guys still on this team, and take away Opening Day, this bullpen has been as good as any in baseball.
The guys still on the roster, have a 2.15 ERA since Opening Day. The Yankees have the best bullpen ERA in the league this year at 2.88. Now the Yankees might be lower too if you take out certain guys who were cut, or remove their worst outing. The point is that outside of one awful outing, the Phillies bullpen is one of the best in all of baseball.
Could they still add a bullpen arm? Sure, you can always be better. One guy you might want to improve upon is Gregory Soto, who has actually been consistent. Otherwise, Alvarado, Matt Straham, Jeff Hoffman, and Orion Kerkering have been fantastic.
Seranthony Dominguez struggled in April. Since May 1st, his ERA is 0.80. He has given up 1 earned run across 11.2 innings in that time. Then there is Jose Ruiz, who no one was expecting anything from, who has a 1.88 ERA in 14 innings.
They are also awaiting the return of Yunior Marte who had a 2.7 ERA in 13.1 innings before his injury.
So why does this bullpen need help? They might not have traditional roles like your normal bullpen, but they have the arms. They have more high-end bullpen arms than arguably any team in baseball.
So calm down, look around in this bullpen, and realize that is already elite. if they do go out and get help, it would only be to make it that much better, not to fix some make-believe hole certain fans have imagined.
