Jose Alvarado Is Fantastic, So Why Are Fans Mad About 1 Game?
The Phillies went 1-1 over the weekend and people’s preexisting biases came roaring back. Jose Alvarado had a 1.4 ERA during his 28 appearances before Sunday’s rough outing. A 1.4 ERA! The reactions were insane mixed with crazy. It was as if his sustained excellence didn’t matter at all because of 1 singular 9th inning.
By every reasonable metric Jose Alvarado has been great. Every single one, yet fans went on the attack immediately. I always try to make sense of why fans react the way that they do. In this case, it seems clear that many just don’t like Alvarado.
Do Fans Just Not Like Jose Alvarado?
Fans can do what they want. They pay with the $$, and their time. I don’t know why fans don’t just admit when they don’t like somebody though. It is not just Jose Alvarado. There are fans who don’t like Aaron Nola, Kyle Schwarber, and Joel Embiid.
There is a percentage of fans that are looking for Jalen Hurts to fail. All of this is allowed of course, but I find it to be repugnant when a person doesn’t just admit it. What good reason is there for a Philadelphia fan to not like Aaron Nola? He has had a very solid career. Last season we suggested a standing ovation for him, like Trea Turner got, and we were shouted down because some fans don’t like him.
Kyle Schwarber has been a winner the entire time in Philadelphia. He isn’t always a conventional leadoff hitter, but he has been very productive. Many fans are overly critical, and they don’t have a good reason for it. It would be much better if they just admitted it was because they don’t like him.
The same goes for Joel Embiid. He has never chosen to be injured so while it is okay to be frustrated, it shouldn’t rise to personal hate. He has won an MVP and has finished 2nd as well. He is a great player. Yet there are a large group of fans who don’t like him and try to disguise it with sports critiques. This applies to both fans and media members.

Sometimes people just rub you the right way. That is allowed. I am not trying to change anyone’s mind. I am simply saying that when we hear certain criticism of guys, we should filter out those who don’t give an athlete a fair shake.
Dislike whoever you want, but admit when you don’t like the person, and have no real issue with the player.
