Andrew Salciunas speaks with Medical Director Tolulope Agunbiade, MD with Virtua Health. They discuss what people should know about heart failure.

Dr. Tolulope Agunbiade is a cardiologist and Medical Director of Advanced Heart Failure at Virtua. Dr. Agunbiade is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, advanced heart failure, transplant cardiology, and echocardiography.

Andrew Salciunas also welcomed guest Bernadine Jones, a patient of Dr. Agunbiade after being referred by her cardiologist.

For a lot of patients, "Heart failure" is a scary term to hear. This is when the heart is unable to pump blood to the rest of the body the way it needs to. Either because the heart muscle is too weak and it's not able to squeeze as hard as it needs to to get the blood to the body, or it is stiff and it's not able to work as well because the muscles in the heart are too stiff.

There are four stages that go from A to D: A being those who are at risk of developing heart failure, and then D being the full extent of it.

With such an intimidating topic, many probably feel real shock when diagnosed. This chat may gain a better understanding so that the term is not so jarring.

Some of the topics of heart failure discussed include:

  • What does it mean when you have heart failure?
  • What are the different stages?
  • What are the symptoms?
  • What kind of tests and what kind of imaging do you do to check whether or not you actually have it?
  • How do you diagnose it?
  • Once you are diagnosed with heart failure what do you do to help better your life moving forward?
