Is It Too Early For The Phillies To Make A Change With Johan Rojas?
Should the Phillies Make A Change With Johan Rojas?
On Kincade And Salciunas Monday morning, Andrew and John got into an interesting debate based on the early struggles of Philadelphia Phillies’ CF Johan Rojas. It’s undeniable that he has not performed offensively through the team’s first 9 games of the season, but with so small of a sample size, is it too early for the Phillies to make a change with Johan Rojas? I believe the answer to that is a resounding “yes”. That being said, though, I understand Andrew’s point of worrying about the fan base turning on the young outfielder.
In fact, if you peruse social media reaction to the Phillies’ start to the year, it isn’t too difficult to find criticism of Rojas. Would he be safer to spend time in AAA ball, and await a more important part of the season to return? Yes, he probably would be. But is that what’s best long-term for him and for the Phillies? No, I don’t believe that’s the case.
To me, the confidence gained from the Major League squad giving you time to develop outweighs the potential confidence gained from maybe being a better hit down in Lehigh.
John and I staunchly defended Rojas before the season, and while I will admit, it’s not looking like the best hill to be standing on right now, the view on this situation needs to be longer than just the first 9 games of the season. If (and it’s a big if) Rojas can eventually figure out how to be a professional hitter, he will be one of the more valuable outfielders in baseball. For now, it’s still far too early to know whether or not that is a fair thing to expect. But, for better or for worse, Rojas will continue to get opportunities as the Phillies’ season continues.
