John Tortorella Challenges Flyers Narratives With Passion & Vulgarity
John Tortorella has a new message about a young Philadelphia Flyers team in a tight playoff chase.
The veteran head coach has had an eventful two-month stretch at the top of the NHL headlines. He’s named Sean Couturier his captain and quickly sat him as a healthy scratch. He earned an ejection from a game and a suspension for not leaving the bench afterwards.
His approach to the media has ranged from the unorthodox decision to send assistant coaches in his place to speak to banging a podium and walking out of a postgame press conference in response to a question he later admitted was fair. Then, he hooked his top goaltender for a Russian mystery who had been in North America less than a week and called out his players for being soft for playing poorly in front of him.
No wonder Bob Cooney can’t stop calling the Flyers second-year head coach “intriguing” on 97.5 The Fanatic.
The conversation has turned 100 different ways, and it turned again on Wednesday. Tortorella spoke with candor, accountability, passion, and vulgarity at the Flyers Training Center.
Flyers Narratives
It’s hard to contest that the Flyers have exceeded expectations in 2023-24. The upstart young squad has occupied a playoff spot since before Christmas, but their recent five-game losing streak has put a postseason berth in jeopardy.
They’re working with inexperience and a talent deficit. They’re tired from keeping up with elite competition for the better part of an 82-game schedule. Tortorella isn’t the type of coach to allow that reality to affect his team’s attitude in the final stretch.
“They’re young? They’re not supposed to be here? Bullshit. We’re here. We’re here. Face it.”

He never disputed the presence of these disadvantages. In fact, he’s consistently shown awareness of the franchise’s bigger picture throughout his two seasons in Philadelphia.
“We need to create our own narrative down there. We need to create our own mindset down there. That’s my job is to create that.” -John Tortorella
Tortorella Shows Accountability
Calling hockey players soft is a deep insult. Tortorella doesn’t regret his choice of words after Monday’s loss against the New York Islanders. However, he recognizes that he can’t throw his players under the bus without acknowledging the need to pull forward as a unit with accountability.
“I don’t think we’re ready to be better, and that’s my problem with us right now. And it is my job. I have not done a good enough job to get them over the hump… I haven’t done a good enough job to make them understand we have to be different now. We have to be at a different level.” -John Tortorella
A heated head coach physically pointed to himself forcefully during the media availability.
“We have put ourself in this spot. Let’s not fade away and say, ‘You know what? We’re not even supposed to be here.’ That sucks. We’re here. That’s where I think I’ve done a shitty job.” -John Tortorella
The Face of the Flyers
The Flyers have tied their wagon to John Tortorella, for better or for worse. The organization has handed him as much (or more) power and influence as any head coach in the NHL. Their self-stated rebuild includes a heavy focus on restoring a strong culture and establishing an identity that once made them great.
Tortorella’s role is to put substance behind these subjective cliches. He’s done exactly what the Flyers were looking for by helping a young team take on the identity of a head coach who has told them to ignore criticism and maximize their talent.
The Flyers entered the season hearing outside noise about how their chances of playoff contention. They tuned out the skeptics and surged into a Metropolitan Division playoff spot early in the season.
They’ve survived the absence of Carter Hart, an unusual trade deadline strategy for a playoff contender/rebuilding team, and a recent barrage of injuries on the blue line.
“I think this is a pretty special group, and I think all the athletes need to learn to tune stuff out. And I think they’ve done a really good job of that. I think it’s a group that’s just locked in together.” -John Tortorella
The intangible attitude carries onto the ice. The Flyers lead the NHL in blocked shots, and they’ve executed an aggressive style that’s led to effective transition offense throughout the season. Individual players like Cam York, Travis Sanheim, Morgan Frost, and Sam Ersson have responded to personalized challenges from their head coach throughout the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons.
These key contributors wouldn’t be playing at the top of the lineup for an NHL playoff contender if Tortorella’s style was falling deaf on the ears of players with any intention of quitting on him. How will they respond to his latest challenge?
“If a player’s going to quit on me or players are going to quit on me because I'm trying to make them better people and better athletes, you’ve got the wrong damn coach here.”
