97.5 The Fanatic Flyers Roundup: Trade Deadline Preview, Konecny & Drysdale Injured
The Philadelphia Flyers survived a partial power outage at the Wells Fargo Center to bounce back from a tough weekend against two Metropolitan Division rivals. The hockey world might concentrate their attention on the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, but John Tortorella and his team still have their sights set on a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They’re certainly willing to fight for it.
- Saturday 2/24: New York Rangers 2, Flyers 1
- Sunday 2/25: Pittsburgh Penguins 7, Flyers 6
- Tuesday 2/27: Flyers 6, Tampa Bay Lightning 2

2024 NHL Trade Deadline Updates
The Calgary Flames kicked the wheels in motion just a week ahead of the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. They dealt Chris Tanev in a three-team trade that brought back a 2nd-round pick, a 3rd-round pick, and a prospect defenseman.
Sean Walker now becomes the top defenseman on the trade market. Danny Briere faces a big measuring stick with leverage in negotiations. The possibility of extending Walker and/or defenseman Nick Seeler in addition to the Flyers’ solid place in the playoff push sets him up favorably.
How will he execute and maximize the value of the coveted defensemen? Tanev is a more valuable target than Walker or Seeler in many ways. Briere still has an opportunity to land an equal (or even greater) package if the right opportunity presents itself. The results of the blue line shuffle ahead of the March 8 deadline might be the most important indicator of Briere’s worth as GM yet.
Expect some fireworks during silly season. Scott Laughton, Rasmus Ristolainen, and Marc Staal will also draw some interest in the upcoming days.
Goaltending Woes
The Flyers lost the luxury of one of the best goaltending tandems in the NHL. Life without Carter Hart requires Tortorella to lean heavily on Sam Ersson. The extended workload becomes even more difficult for a rookie if he doesn’t have a reliable backup.
Felix Sandstrom will get his shot in the Philadelphia crease after the Flyers waived Cal Petersen to send him to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Tortorella estimated that the backup goaltender will relieve Ersson in four or five games the remainder of the regular season.
Petersen allowed seven goals in Sunday’s wild loss to the Penguins on national television. The high-priced 29-year-old goaltender wears a left-handed blocker, which isn’t common in the NHL. Pittsburgh shooters identified and exposed his clear weakness stopping short side shots on his blocker side.
Sandstrom has an unimpressive .882 save percentage (SV%) in 20 AHL games in 2023-24. He didn’t light the world on fire as Hart’s primary backup in 2022-23 either, but the Flyers believe he provides a more serviceable temporary solution than Petersen.
Jamie Drysdale, Travis Konecny Injury Updates
The Flyers also sent Jamie Drysdale to injured reserve with an upper-body injury. He left Sunday’s game in Pittsburgh after a bone-crushing hit from Jansen Harkins that appeared to affect his left shoulder. He missed 74 games in 2022-23 with a torn left labrum.
Drysdale is officially listed as week-to-week, but it’s lofty for the Flyers to expect him back as a healthy contributor for the playoff chase. The former 6th-overall pick has two goals and two assists in 17 games since moving to Philadelphia in the Cutter Gauthier trade. He has struggled with defensive lapses at times despite his dynamic talent and long-term potential.
Travis Konecny missed his third consecutive game against the Lightning. He still leads the team in scoring by a solid margin, and the Flyers need their best offensive threat back in the lineup to hold off talented and potent teams chasing them in the Metropolitan Division race.
Bobby Brink took advantage of Konecny’s absence with a first period goal in his first game after a recall from Lehigh Valley. Ronnie Attard will join the NHL club this weekend in response to the injury to Jamie Drysdale. The 24-year-old defenseman showed some raw burst in 16 NHL games in 2021-22. He’s notched 78 points in 114 games for the Phantoms the past two seasons.

The New Philadelphia Sports Complex?
Dan Hilferty began the “New Era of Orange” as a man with a vision. The plan involved a lot more off the Wells Fargo Center ice, however.
The CEO and Chairman of Comcast Spectacor spoke on 97.5 The Fanatic about his long-term vision for the Philadelphia Sports Complex. Short-term construction will include upgrades surrounding Xfinity Live! and retail and hotel options near the G and H lots.
Hilferty’s real stunner came when he spoke about a long-term goal of keeping the Sixers in South Philly. Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment fully intends on leaving the Wells Fargo Center after construction of 76ers Place in the Fashion District. Could the Flyers and Sixers agree on a new arena plan that would involve a 50/50 scheduling share? Hilferty believes so.
“Could you imagine the great Sixers organization, the great Flyers organization, and Comcast Spectacor teaming up based on cities all over the country, all over the world, to bring the best acts, the best concerts right here to South Philadelphia where we can accommodate them with all this great space?” -Dan Hilferty
