How Important Is Twitter or X to Sports Fans?
Remember when all those sports fans and other people told you they were going to leave Twitter or X? Whether you like it or not, the numbers show nobody really exited the platform. In fact, if anyone in the sports media says “Hey, follow me on Threads,” they are making more of a statement about what they wanted to happen than reality.
On a daily basis, I find so many things I love about X with the interaction possibilities leading that list. Those who exist to troll and the endless bots make it conversely maddening. A recent media analysis from ExplodingTopics.com was revealing. Sports media needs X.
X has a large audience, but not as large as others.
With over half a billion users, the audience X delivers is impressive. It is completely dominated by the number of people using Facebook, You Tube, What’s App, and Instagram worldwide. Those platforms at minimum have four or five times the amount of users monthly.
The X user is far more male than female.
Two thirds of X users are male, and that is the largest male percentage of any top social media platform. So if you are in the sports industry, it makes X a necessity instead of an option.
Age of Target Audience
58% of X users are 35 years of age or younger. With the large percentage of males that X provides and the younger generation of sports fans flocking to the app, it is essential to engage and deliver content to your audience on it.
Dominance in the US
Almost 20% of all X users are American. Only Japan is close with roughly 17% of the audience. No other country accounts for more than 6% of the community. American content is king. When USA sports leagues want to extend their reach, using X is a smart strategy.
My Thoughts
I enjoyed the X app far more when it was still called Twitter. It seems like a classroom with a substitute teacher in charge. What I love is understanding audience trends and interests better. Having immediate feedback on topics is fantastic. Muting trolls is also very easy.
I try to interact every day with my sports fans via X/Twitter. Sports fans are directly seated in the target demo. Join the party, and hold your nose if you must. By the way, nobody fled to Threads. Get in the mix!
