Flyers NHL Trade Deadline Targets: 2 Fits From The Winnipeg Jets
The Philadelphia Flyers and the Winnipeg Jets both occupy playoff positions approaching the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. However, Danny Briere and Kevin Cheveldayoff face two completely different situations in the GM chair. High & Wide Hockey described the two respective franchises as a good match before the upcoming deadline.
The window of Stanley Cup contention looks like it’s closing in Winnipeg. Cheveldayoff needs to act quickly to maximize the prime years of stars like Mark Scheifele and Connor Hellebuyck. He could look to fortify the blue line, and the rebuilding Flyers have defensemen Sean Walker and Nick Seeler on expiring contract as potential trade candidates.
Winnipeg will almost certainly earn one of the three Central Division playoff spots. Would they be willing to part with any of their top prospects to load up for a playoff run?

Chaz Lucius
The Jets selected Chaz Lucius with the 18th-overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Chuck Fletcher and the Flyers lucratively dealt the 14th-overall pick for Rasmus Ristolainen days before the draft.
Lucius possesses key traits like speed and acceleration, strong hockey IQ, and potential as a two-way forward. He burst out of the gates in the WHL in 2022-23 with 15 points in six junior games, and he also showed offensive upside in a strong showing with Team USA at the 2023 World Juniors.
The Flyers have also shown a preference for fellow top prospects out of the US National Team Development Program like Joel Farabee, Cam York, Cutter Gauthier, and Devin Kaplan. They need centers like Lucius with high upside within their organizational depth chart.
Where’s the downside? Lucius has struggled to stay healthy. He suffered a serious knee injury before his draft year, and his hot streak in the WHL in 2022-23 ended because of a shoulder injury that wiped out the rest of his season. An ankle procedure will keep him out for the remainder of 2023-24.
The Kansas native had played well for the Manitoba Moose in the AHL this season, but the injuries have unquestionably affected his value within the organization. When young players have injury red flags, it sometimes pushes teams to act quickly for immediate benefit.
Briere could catch Cheveldayoff as an impulsive buyer willing to move a top prospect who won’t help the Jets compete for a Stanley Cup this spring. The Flyers could use that leverage to address their lack of young centers. Waiving the injury risk could land them a long-term steal if they get a little bit of luck.
Brad Lambert
Brad Lambert slipped down the draft boards in 2022 and landed with the Jets at the 30th-overall spot. He has a better AHL track record than Lucius with solid offensive production in a larger body of work in 2023-24. He’s played the top-line center role with Lucius on the second line at times.
The 20-year-old Finn has also played on the wing at other points during his development. Lambert has improved his prospect stock this season. He’ll likely cost more than Lucius. However, the Jets are unlikely to trade 22-year-old NHLer Cole Perfetti or University of Michigan star Rutger McGroarty.
Cheveldayoff will have to recognize the need to move on from some of his young talent if he plans on making an impactful splash ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline on March 8.
While it’ll inevitably be hard for Briere to land a developing talent like Brad Lambert, the Flyers hold the right negotiation cards with some of the top defensemen on the market. Expect the rookie GM to strike with a move to bring in a young center.
