Schefter: Dak Prescott Contract Is A Potential Offseason Curveball
Adam Schefter made his weekly appearance on The John Kincade Show to discuss the future of Haason Reddick, possible NFL rule changes, and possible offseason changes for the Philadelphia Eagles. The most intriguing points he made, however, were about Dak Prescott and his contract with the Dallas Cowboys.
Dak Prescott Contract
Jerry Jones didn’t give the most convincing endorsements when he spoke at the Super Bowl about his starting quarterback. Schefter read between the lines.
“It sounded like he was talking out of both sides of his mouth there. On the one hand, (Jones was) complementing Dak, but also it felt like he was taking little jabs at him.” -Adam Schefter
If Jones believes his own statement that the Cowboys will only go as far as Prescott takes them, the long-time owner can’t be happy with the results he saw last season. Dallas plummeted in the NFC Wild Card Round after the 2023 season to continue their pattern of annual tailspins that seems to give Eagles fans as much satisfaction as a victory for the hometown team.
Schefter spoke about how Prescott’s contract situation will have ripple effects throughout the organization. The former 4th-round pick carries a $59 million cap hit entering 2024.
The Cowboys would like to sign Micah Parsons and CeeDee Lamb to long-term extensions. They’d need Prescott’s cooperation to restructure his contract and create the flexibility to sign the two franchise building blocks.
“That’s going to be the key to Dallas’ offseason to see whether they can get that deal done, in my mind.”-Schefter
Most NFL organizations find a way to lock up a franchise quarterback when they have the opportunity. However, the Cowboys don’t always follow the typical blueprint. Schefter doesn’t look at the contract situation as a lay-up issue that Jerry Jones will resolve easily.
Philadelphia fans can keep a close eye on potential drama for the chief competition in the NFC East.
NFL Officials
The offseason usually includes rule changes, even if they’re simple tweaks. Schefter believes the performance of officials will be a major topic of conversation.
“Every team that I’ve spoken to sounds frustrated by the officials. Every team seems to have their own ideas about what they can do to improve the state of the officiating in the National Football League. The question is: how does the league do that?” -Schefter
