Eagles Can’t Hide Behind ‘Super Bowl Hangover’ Excuse
There is one silver lining to the 2023 NFL season for Eagles fans finally came to an end when the Chiefs defeated the 49ers. Now that Kyle Shanahan has once again failed to hold a double-digit lead in the Super Bowl, it will be the 49ers who will suffer the “Super Bowl hangover”.
Oh wait, that would mean that a Super Bowl hangover would have to actually exist. If you listen to sports talk radio in Philadelphia, it might seem like the year after losing the Super Bowl is inevitably terrible. Is it though? I believe it’s just a typical lazy narrative that somehow gained footing.
Look at the facts since the season the Eagles won Super Bowl LII. Judge for yourself;
The 2018 Patriots
The Patriots had such a terrible hangover. They drunkenly made it to a Super Bowl and defeated the Rams to win a championship.
Verdict: Hugely Successful Drunks
The 2019 Rams
After losing the Super Bowl to the Patriots, Los Angeles went 9-7 and missed the playoffs.
Verdict: Slightly disappointing
The 2020 49ers
Finally, an underachieving team. San Francisco went 6-10 after losing the Super Bowl to the Chiefs. Ravaged by injuries and salary cap hell, they missed the playoffs.
Verdict: Exception, Not the Rule
The 2021 Chiefs
After losing in the Super Bowl to the Buccaneers, Kansas City won their division and went 12-5 before losing to the Bengals in the AFC Title Game.
Verdict: Final 4 team, No DUI here
The 2022 Bengals
Cincinnati won their division with a 12-4 record after losing Super Bowl LVI to the Rams. They proceeded to win two playoff games and advance to the AFC Championship Game against the Chiefs in Kansas City.
Verdict: Final 4 team, Very Sober
The 2023 Eagles
The Eagles stared out 10-1, the best starting record ever for a team the season after losing the Super Bowl. So if you believe in hangovers, it had a delayed effect and began the first Sunday in December. They went 11-6 and lost in the Wild Card round.
Verdict: HOGWASH
Summary Judgment
So one of the last six Super Bowl losing teams had an actual losing season the next year. One captured a Lombardi Trophy, and four made the playoffs with only one of those teams failing to win a playoff game.
The Super Bowl hangover term needs to die a quick death. At the very least, don’t expect that the 49ers are going anywhere. How they deal with this disappointing loss is a tale yet to be written.

It’s time to call Shanahan & the #49ers exactly what they are…
