With his history, and how it looked on Tuesday night, fans feared the worst. The reality is maybe slightly better than people hoped. But worse than they hoped too. Per Adrian Wojnarowski, Joel Embiid has torn his left meniscus.
So the good news, is that it does not seem like a season-ending injury. But it is just another injury the big man has to play through. And this time it happens in the middle of a historic season by him. Embiid is averaging over a point per minute, something only 1 other player in NBA history has accomplished. If he stayed healthy, he appeared to be a near lock to repeat as MVP. And he had the Sixers playing the best basketball we have seen them play as a team.
Now, who knows how the rest of the season will go? He could come back eventually, and look great. But the injury could also linger and it will be another playoffs with Embiid limited.
This comes on top of all the other injuries the Sixers have battled. Deanthony Melton and Robert Covington have been out for an extended period of time already. Tyrese Maxey missed the last few games too. Now, they are without Embiid for at least the weekend, and likely further beyond that.
The goal needs to be his long-term health. For the playoffs, and the future. So as tempting as it is to bring him back as quickly as possible, what is best for him and the team is to hold back until he is actually ready. They tried to force him back against the Warriors, and it may have contributed to this injury. Hold him back, and hope the rest of the team is enough to keep them afloat. And maybe go out and trade for a center before the deadline.

The Sixers came into this season with lower expectations than they have had in a while. Their 5th second round exit, compounded with the James Harden drama, had Sixers vibes the lowest they have been since the Process years. But even those at least had hope for the future. It was so bad there were some fans ready to blow it all up and start over again. But thankfully the Sixers did not do that. Because it turns out this has actually been one of the most fun seasons we have had in recent memory. The team Daryl Morey put together is playing fantastic basketball right now.
Joel Embiid is playing the best ball of his career. Tyrese Maxey has blossomed into a star player. Tobias Harris is playing great team ball. And between Nico Batum, Marcus Morris, and Pat Beverley, they have one of the best groups of role players we have seen in the Embiid era. The Sixers are currently the 3 seed in the East and the 5th seed overall in the NBA.
Yesterday, we had a chance to sit down and talk with Team President Daryl Morey. Bob Cooney, Andrew Salciunas, and Tyrone Johnson broadcasted live from the 6th Annual Sixers Youth Foundation Gala. The team celebrated "50 years of Hip-Hop" while raising money for local kids in need. We were joined by multiple Sixers guests, and one of our first guests on the special broadcast was Daryl Morey.
He talked about how well Embiid is playing, the growth of Maxey, the job Nick Nurse has done, his plans for the trade deadline, and more. And if you missed it, or would just like to hear what he had to say again, we have you covered.
