Eagles Survive Mental Mistakes To End Their Losing Streak
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - DECEMBER 25: D'Andre Swift #0 of the Philadelphia Eagles hurdles Dane Belton #24 of the New York Giants to avoid a tackle for a first down during the fourth quarter at Lincoln Financial Field on December 25, 2023 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The losing streak is finally over. After losing 3 straight games, the Eagles finally got back to what they had been doing all season long, winning ugly. But there likely won’t be any celebrating after the win. While it may put them back on top of the NFC East, there were still way too many troubling signs to be happy with how they played. And the story of the game won’t be the final score. It will be the many mental mistakes along the way that made the game closer than it had to be.
Things were going mostly well. And at the end of the first half they were driving down the field, with a chance to go up 24-3. But wasted timeouts and a baffling choice by Jalen Hurts to cut inbounds forced the Eagles to settle for a FG. It only got worse when they came out of the locker room. First, it was Olamide Zaccheaus running into Boston Scott on the kick return, causing him to fumble, and giving the Giants the ball at the Phi 14. That led to a TD. Two drives later the Eagles were driving into the Red Zone. But Dallas Goedert slipped, and Adoree Jackson returned an interception for a TD. Later it was Reed Blankenship taking the worst path to a ball carrier I have ever seen, letting Darius Slayton go 69 yards for a TD.
…
The Eagles just could not get out of their own way. If you just looked at the box score, it looks like it should be an Eagles blowout. They had 173 more yards, 12 more first downs, and held the Giants under 200 passing yards. But the mistakes piled up, keeping the Giants in it until the very last second.
And that is how the whole season has gone. This team can be their own worst enemy. If Olamide doesn’t take out his own teammate, and Goedert doesn’t slip, the Eagles win 33-10. But those things did happen. Those types of things keep happening this season. And they are the types of things that will sink this team in the playoffs if they don’t get their act together.

8 Philadelphia Sports Grievances We Need To Air On Festivus
In the past several years, Philadelphia Sports has somehow been the best it has ever been, but also the most frustrating it has ever been. Between 2022 and 2023, 3 of our teams played in their respective Championship. The Phillies, Union, and the Eagles. But all 3 lost. The Phillies made it back to the NLCS the next year but blew up spectacularly to let the Diamondbacks go to the World Series. And the Sixers have continued to fail to get out of the second round, but have also played the best Basketball we have seen since AI was here.
It makes it hard to decide how we should feel. On one hand, nearly all of our teams have been competitive every year. They have given us more to cheer for than nearly any generation of Philadelphia sports. But on the other, none of them actually reached the promising land. All of them came up short in increasingly frustrating ways.
So on this Festivus, we have some things to air out. Because we love our teams like family. But with love comes pain. Because no one annoys you more than the people you love. But it is not just the players and teams who I have grievances with because the fanbase is equally annoying at the time. And as Frank Costanza once said, “I got a lot of problems with you people! And now you’re gonna hear about it!”
By the way, credit to Ray Dunne for doing this idea first on air, and inspiring me to turn it into an article. I’m sure now that I have copied his content idea he will have yet another grievance with me. And for those unfamiliar with Festivus, here is a reminder of what we are talking about.
Here are 8 Philadelphia Sports Greivences I need to air this Festivus:
