Don’t Be Like 49ers Fans: There’s Still Hope for the Eagles

Resist the urge Eagles fans. Don’t repeat the behavior of the San Francisco 49ers team, media, and fans after they got plastered in the NFC Championship Game. The Philadelphia defensive line dominated the San Francisco offensive line and knocked out two of their quarterbacks. Fans of the 49ers didn't take it very well.
It was a butt whipping on Sunday, however. That is EXACTLY what we all saw. Don't attempt to spin it any other way. The 49ers talked the talk and then delivered. That gets a tip of the hat from me. The fact is, it’s not all bad news. Here are a few truths and bright spots.
You’ve opened the door to lose the top seed in the NFC.
IF the Eagles lose one of their last five games AND the 49ers win their remaining five, San Francisco will have the bye and home-field advantage in the NFC. The Eagles would then hope they are the best of the rest to have the second seed, which gives you two guaranteed home games before a potential NFC Championship Game berth.
You’ve got a chance to lock up the NFC East on Sunday at Dallas.
IF the Eagles win on Sunday, they will hold the first tie-breaker in the NFC East. They would be up by 2.5 games with 4 to play. It all but ensures the NFC East title. How the Eagles respond knowing that they just got trounced and have a chance for redemption should tell us a lot about their January chances.
If they lose at Dallas, the Eagles still can guarantee the NFC East title by doing this:
IF the Eagles were to lose to the Cowboys, they still are in very good shape to win the NFC East. They would have to run the table at Seattle, home against the Giants and Cardinals, and at the Giants.
That should lock it up UNLESS Dallas wins their last five games. The Cowboys have the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins on the road in consecutive weeks. If they trip up in one of those, the Eagles will hold the common opponent tie-breaker.
SUMMARY
The Eagles MUST win their final five games to guarantee the top seed in the NFC. They SHOULD be home free in the NFC with a win on Sunday at Dallas.
The Eagles will need Dallas to lose at Buffalo or Miami to control the common opponent statistic. That assumes that the Eagles will NOT lose one of their final four games.
EVERYONE CHILL
There is a long way to go. Personally, a loss at Dallas will make me very doubtful that the Eagles will return to the Super Bowl. I’m confident they can rebound.

The Philadelphia Eagles met their worst embarrassment of the 2023 NFL season in Week 13. The San Francisco 49ers dominated at Lincoln Financial Field in a 42-19 blowout.
The Birds have dealt with injuries to key players in recent weeks. Lane Johnson, Fletcher Cox, and Milton Williams returned against the 49ers. Zach Cunningham was out of the lineup, and the linebackers struggled without him and Nakobe Dean on the field. Jack Stoll started in place of the injured Dallas Goedert.
Who will return as Week 14 starters for the Eagles?
Eagles Suffer Cringy Loss Against 49ers
The 49ers failed to move the chains with a first down on their first two drives. The Eagles defense fell apart in the second quarter, however.
Brock Purdy moved the San Francisco offense down the field with ease and incredible efficiency for the remainder of the afternoon. Starting linebackers Nicholas Morrow and Christian Elliss struggled to contain offensive standouts Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and Christian McCaffrey.
Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia offense started with two effective drives, but they stopped short of the end zone both times. They failed to take control of the game while the defense struggled.
Nick Sirianni has begun his NFL head coaching career with a 33-13 record in regular-season games. However, the 23-point loss was the worst the Eagles have suffered under their third-year head coach.
Projected Philadelphia Eagles Week 14 Starters
Dallas Goedert and Zach Cunnigham will be the most important Eagles to keep an eye on leading up to a Week 14 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
Goedert has missed the past three games with a forearm injury. The Eagles initially chose not to put him on injured reserve, which designates a four-game absence. His status was in question last week, and the sixth-year tight end would theoretically return against the Cowboys.
Cunningham missed the 49ers game with a hamstring injury, and Jeff McLane suspects that he might remain on the sidelines longer. While Jalen Hurts left the Week 13 game for concussion tests, his status shouldn't be in question moving forward.
With the need for a bounce-back effort, Sirianni hopes to have his roster at full strength.
