Tracking Every Player Cut By The Eagles Before The Deadline
NFL Cut down day is here. For many, it is the day their dream to make an NFL roster is made. But for many others, it is the day their dream ends, or at least hits a temporary roadblock. So many players, including young guys trying to get their first shot, or veterans trying to extend their career, are getting called into the office today to have the bad news broken to them.
Some will even get extra heartbreak by making it at the deadline, only to be cut later when the Eagles claim another player off of waivers. And others may get early heartbreak, and still wind up on the 53-man roster come week 1 when the Eagles play the Patriots. Cut-down day is by no means final, but it does give us a general idea of what the roster will look like.
Teams have to go from 90, all the way down to 53. Around 37 players per team, assuming every team kept the full 90-player roster in camp. Teams are no longer required to make any cuts earlier in camp. So most of the cuts all happen on this day. But who will make it, or not make it, for the Eagles? Will there be any surprise names released?
Cut downs have already started for the Eagles, with a few surprising names among the bunch. But far more are still to come.
Keep track of all the names being released by the Eagles right here.
TE- Tyree Jackson
There was a chance Tyree Jackson made it. He had a pretty nice camp again. But it was not to be. The Eagles cut Tyree, meaning it will likely be Grant Calcaterra and Jack Stoll as the backup TEs. Jackson could still land on the practice squad provided no other team claims him. But his upside could be tempting enough that some team out there may want to roll the dice with him.
The #Eagles also are waiving TE Tyree Jackson, per source. An intriguing athlete who had five catches for 72 yards in the preseason and could get claimed.
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) August 26, 2023WR Deon Cain
Deon Cain has been around Eagles camp before and has impressed. But there was never any room for him. The Eagles are too deep at WR, and he was mostly here as a camp body, and for his sake to hopefully convince some other team to claim him.
#Eagles are releasing WR Deon Cain, an NFL source said.
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) August 26, 2023
Number released today should be around 20, bringing the roster to 70ish. Bubble players should have practices Sunday and Monday to make last impression before 53-man deadline on Tuesday 4 p.m.QB Ian Book
Ian Book quickly fell behind on the QB depth chart. Tanner Mckee looked very good in the preseason games, and Ian Book looked awful. Bad enough that there will likely be no team claiming him. His best hope now is to either land on the Eagles practice squad, or a practice squad somewhere else.
#Eagles have started to release players today. TEs Tyree Jackson and Dan Arnold have already cut, per @TomPelissero. QB Ian Book was also released, to no surprise, an NFL source said.
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) August 26, 2023OT Dennis Kelly
When they signed him, he seemed a lock to make the team as a swing tackle. But it became clear he was available for a reason. Kelly had been a solid backup in the past, but he looked bad in camp and in games and played his way out of a job. As a vet, he is released outright and can sign with whatever team he wants. The question is will any team want him?
#Eagles are releasing several veteran offensive linemen who could have value for other teams on the waiver wire: Dennis Kelly, Brett Toth, and Josh Andrews, per NFL sources.
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) August 26, 2023C- Brett Toth
Instead of keeping Toth as a backup center, it seems the Eagles’ backup center will be starting RG Cam Jurgens. Jurgens is billed as Kelce’s future replacement. And while you usually prefer to not make multiple changes on the line to fill one spot, Jurgens is better enough than any of the backup Center options, Toth included, it would be worth sliding him to center, and putting Tyler Steen at RG.
#Eagles are releasing several veteran offensive linemen who could have value for other teams on the waiver wire: Dennis Kelly, Brett Toth, and Josh Andrews, per NFL sources.
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) August 26, 2023C- Cameron Tom
Cameron Tom is another guy who never had much of a shot to make the roster. If they were going to keep a true backup center, it would have been Brett Toth. But the Eagles will instead just roll with Jurgens as the backup center.
WR Greg Ward
Greg Ward has been around the Eagles for a long time. he gets cut, but don’t be surprised if he lands on the practice squad, and even back on the team later in the year if they need to add some depth.
The #Eagles are also releasing WR Greg Ward, source says. He’s not subject to waivers so he’ll be free to sign anywhere once released. Possible he returns to Philly on the practice squad.
— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) August 29, 2023TE Dan Arnold
Dan Arnold was always a campbody. The only Tight end with a chance to steal one of the spots was Tyree Jackson. So it comes to no one’s surprise that Dan Arnold was released before the cut-down deadline.
The #Eagles are releasing veteran TE Dan Arnold, per source. Arnold is still only 28 and Philly is doing the vet a solid by getting him out there before the rush.
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) August 26, 2023OL- Josh Andrews
Andrews is a 10-year vet, who started his career with Philly. But his second stint here was never to be. From the start of camp, he seemed buried on the depth chart and did not do enough to convince the Eagles to keep him as a 10th O-Lineman.
#Eagles are releasing several veteran offensive linemen who could have value for other teams on the waiver wire: Dennis Kelly, Brett Toth, and Josh Andrews, per NFL sources.
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) August 26, 2023WR- Devon Allen
Some thought Devon Allen may have made a case to be the return specialist in that final game. But at least for now, that is not the case. But he will likely land on the practice squad and will be there as an option should they want to give him a chance there. His speed is intriguing enough that the Eagles will hold onto him for as long as they can.
The #Eagles are waiving WR Devon Allen, source says. Practice squad a possibility if he clears waivers.
— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) August 29, 2023WR- Britain Covey
Covey getting cut is surprising, until you remember he was cut last year too, and still ended up on the 53-man roster in week 1. In fact, they moved him down to the practice squad a lot last year, just to bring him back up before the game. it is their way of gaming the system. So even though he was cut, do not be surprised if he is back here as the punt returner in week 1. It could also be a sign they go with Trey Sermon as the return man though, We will know better at 4 pm.
The #Eagles released WR/returner Britain Covey, an NFL source said. He could return to the 53, and at the least to the practice squad.
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) August 29, 2023
Sources also confirm @MikeGarafolo reports that WRs Devon Allen and Greg Ward were released.RB- Kennedy Brooks
There were way too many RBs on the roster for Brooks to have any shot at making the team. he will either be claimed by another team or end up on the practice squad.
LB Quinton Bell
With all the names getting a shot to play at LB, the fact you never heard anything from Bell, was sign enough that he was a sure fire cut candidate.
DT Robert Cooper
The Eagles are far too deep at Defensive Tackle for a guy like Robert Cooper to have even had a shot at cracking the roster.
WR Jadon Haselwood
Jalen Hurts’ former teammate never had much of a chance to make it, especially in a crowded WR room.
LB Tyreek Maddox-Williams
He flashed a ton in the final pre-season game. But that was never going to be enough. The Eagles probably made up most of their decisions before that game vs. the Colts was played.
DT Olive Sagapolu
Olive Sagapolu is an interesting prospect. Were the eagles less deep at DT, he is a guy who could have cracked the roster. But there was never really a spot for him. So expect to see him on the practice squad, and maybe have a chance to make it next season.
DT Caleb Sanders
See Robert Cooper. Too much competition at DT.
WR Freddie Swain
A late addition to the Eagles camp roster, he was mostly just a camp body for the final week. He has played in the NFL before, most recently with the Seahawks, so he could be a guy who lands elsewhere on a team with less depth at WR.
DT Marvin Wilson
Wilson could be a practice squad candidate if he is not claimed by another team. He spent some time on the active roster the last two seasons.
#Eagles haven’t announced all their releases yet, but the following were:
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) August 27, 2023
Quinton Bell
Ian Book
Kennedy Brooks
Robert Cooper
Jadon Haselwood
Tyree Jackson
Johnny King
Tyreek Maddox-Williams
Tyrese Robinson
Olive Sagapolu
Caleb Saunders
Freddie Swain
Marvin WilsonWR Johnny King
When you a WR, and get the number 43, it is never a good sign of your chances to make the roster.
The #Eagles are waiving WR Johnny King, per source.
— Andrew DiCecco (@AndrewDiCecco) August 26, 2023OL Tyrese Robinson
The Eagles have too much depth at Guard for Robinson to have any chance to make it. Were he a LT, there may have been a shot for him.
#Eagles are releasing OL Tyrese Robinson, an NFL source said.
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) August 26, 2023P- Arryn Siposs
Long time coming. Siposs has been one of the worst punters in the league the last few seasons. It is not clear who the Eagles punter will be, but cutting Siposs was the right choice.
Eagles are releasing punter Arryn Siposs … obviously they are bringing in other punters to work out…
— Derrick Gunn (@RealDGunn) August 29, 2023DT- Noah Ellis
Noah Ellis has been waived with an injury settlement. Ellis stuck around with the Eagles last year but saw no game action.
Eagles have signed CB Isaiah Rodgers, who was subsequently placed on the Reserve/Suspended list and Waived DT Noah Elliss with an injury settlement. pic.twitter.com/ArE3Iew44W
— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) August 28, 2023WR- Joseph Ngata
Ngata may have had some hope that he would make it when he was among the final 5 WRs left on the roster. Turns out it wasn’t to be. He has been waived by the Eagles. If he clears waivers, he will certainly be back on the practice squad.
The Eagles are waiving WR Joseph Ngata, per source. He could land on the practice squad if he clears.
— Dave Zangaro (@DZangaroNBCS) August 29, 2023OL- Julian Good-Jones
There just was no room for Julian Good-Jones on the inside, despite a solid camp. But he is an ideal practice squad candidate. His ability to play both guard and center will be valuable to the Eagles in the future once Kelce retires, and Cam Jurgens moves over to Center.
#Eagles are waiving OL Julian Good-Jones, source says.
— Andrew DiCecco (@AndrewDiCecco) August 29, 2023Josiah Scott
No surprise here. Scott had a chance to prove himself last year when he filled in for Avonte Maddox and did not play well. With so much young talent in the Eagles CB room, it would be hard to justify giving Scott a 2nd chance.
#Eagles are going to waive CB Josiah Scott, source said.
— Adam Caplan (@caplannfl) August 29, 2023TE Brady Russell
Brady Russel had a good camp, there just was no room for another blocking specialist on the team with Jack Stoll already here. Expect him back on the practice squad.
The Eagles are waiving TE Brady Russell, per a source. Could join the practice squad if he clears waivers.
— Dave Zangaro (@DZangaroNBCS) August 29, 2023DE- Tarron Jackson
There was way too much depth at edge rusher for Tarron Jackson to have a shot. Especially with him having a quiet camp. He could be a practice squad guy though.
Source: #Eagles are waiving DE Tarron Jackson.
— Andrew DiCecco (@AndrewDiCecco) August 29, 2023RB- Trey Sermon
The Eagles would have liked to keep Trey Sermon. But it is hard to justify keeping 5 RBS. Many hoped they would keep him as a return man, but it wasn’t to be. He very well might be someone who is picked up by another team, but the Eagles would love to have him on the practice squad if no one signs him.
The #Eagles are releasing RB Trey Sermon, source said.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) August 29, 2023LB- Nicholas Morrow
He was the starter coming into camp. But Christain Elliss passed him, and then they signed Zach Cunningham who quickly passed him as well. Now he is not even on the team. because of the questions at LB, some thought the Eagles may keep him for security. But that was not the case. He gets waived.
#Eagles are waiving LB Nicholas Morrow, an NFL source said.
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) August 29, 2023S- K'Von Wallace
This one is a bit surprising. Well at the start of camp, it would not have been. But then he played pretty well, and some thought he might have earned a starting role. But apparently not. Wallace gets waived, making the way for Justin Evans to make the roster, and maybe be the starter in week 1. It could also mean Sydney Brown will start week 1, which is what will make fans most happy.
The #Eagles are waiving 2020 fourth-round pick K’Von Wallace, source said.
— Andrew DiCecco (@AndrewDiCecco) August 29, 2023LB- Kyron Johnson
There was some thought Johnson would stick for what he offers on the practice squad. Especially with all the injuries to other special teamers in camp. Nope. He gets waived and could likely return on the practice squad.
Eagles are cutting linebacker Kyron Johnson, according to a league source. Johnson, a 2022 sixth-round pick, part of stacked edge-rush group. He lso dealt with appendectomy over final weeks of camp.
— Josh Tolentino (@JCTSports) August 29, 2023
Strong practice squad candidate. Johnson had 265 special teams snaps as rookie.OL- Josh Sills
Sills stayed on the roster all through a criminal trial, only to get cut when he could finally play because of how bad he looked. That brings them down to 9 O-Lineman on the roster and leaves the Eagles with less depth than they would usually like. There could be an OL waiver claim in the future.
Eagles released OL Josh Sills
