Phillies Get Good News On Bryce Harper And Kyle Schwarber
When both Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber came up injured in Thursday Nights game vs the Marlins, fans feared the worst. A fantastic season for the Phillies flashed before our eyes, as we imagined a long period of time without two of the Phillies best hitters.
Harper in particular was the fear. harper was on pace for an MVP season. Since May 1st, only Aaron Judge has numbers that can compare to Harper. Over the last 30 days he boasted a slash line of .379/.454/.716/1.170.
But it seems for now, the Phillies got off lucky.
Good News On Bryce Harper And Kyle Schwarber
Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber are heading to the IL. Which seems like bad news. But neither injury is expected to be serious, or keep them out for an extended period of time.
Rob Thomson called both injuries minor, and said 10-14 days. He also said they won’t rush them, but he seemed confident none would be much longer than the 10-day minimum. After the All-Star break at the latest. Knowing Harper, it will be before the All-Star Break. He has a knack for beating recovery timetables, and I can imagine he wants to play in the All-Star Game.
Thomson also said that Harpers injury is more similar to the Brandon Marsh, not Trea Turner. Turner missed significant time, but Marsh only missed 12 days. He went on the IL on June 3rd, was back June 15th. That same time table would have Harper back July 10th, the 2nd game in a 3 game series with the Dodgers.
It still sucks. Getting by without them for 2 weeks will still be hard. But in the grand scheme of things, it is good news. Especially with how bad it looked for Harper when he came up grabbing his hamstring.
Phillies Have Room For Error
The Phillies have given themselves a lot of wiggle room. Not just with the Braves, but with the Dodgers for the NL lead too. They hold an 8 game lead over the Braves, and a 2.5-game lead over the Dodgers.
They also have the luxury of having an amazing pitching staff. As valuable as Harper is, they aren’t relying solely on the bats. It has been their pitching staff that has them at the top of the NL East. So if those guys keep shutting bats down, they won’t need as much run support over the next two weeks while Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber heal.
What They Will Do Without Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber
None of it is ideal. But it is good news considering what our initial fears were. Some assumed we could lose Harper for as long as they lost Trea Turner. Maybe more than that. But if it is just s 2-week IL Stint, plus the All Star break, they can survive that.
Kody Clemens and Johan Rojas were called up in their absence. Clemens and Bohm could split time at 1st. Rob Thomson said that as long as Rojas is here, he will play almost everyday. So that could move Marsh back to left, and maybe move Castellanos to the DH spot while Schwarber is out.
There will be a lot of mixing and matching. But luckily it won’t be for too long. After the Marlins, the Phillies have the Cubs, Braves, Dodgers, and Athletics coming up before the All-Star Break. So not an ideal time to lose Harper. But based on what Rob Thomson told the media, he could be back for the Dodgers series. Schwarber before that.
