A Moment For Bryce Harper: Is The Phillies Star Getting Enough Love?
The Phillies are off to a historic start to the season. There is a lot of praise to be thrown around between the young guys emerging as stars, the starting rotation, and the bullpen which has been very good after the 1st week of the season. It is hard to believe, but Bryce Harper has been a bit of an afterthought so far.
Younger Guys Stealing The Spotlight From Bryce Harper
Alec Bohm & Ranger Suarez have taken a ton of the headlines so far this year. Bohm is an MVP candidate, and Suarez is top 3 for the Cy Young.
We were all worried when Trea Turner went down with a hamstring injury. Then you add the fact that Harper missed a couple games after somersaulting into the dugout early in the year and it makes sense that Harper hasn’t been top of mind. But Harper has taken off in May.
Bryce Harper’s Amazing May
This month, Bryce Harper has an OPS of 1.111 (Stott’s is 1.073). He is now on pace to hit 40 homer runs and to knock in 130 runs.
While Bohm has rightfully gotten a ton of credit for his RBI’s so far, because he is tied for the major league lead. Harper has sneakily worked his way up to 8th in the majors in RBIs. He is also tied for 8th in home runs. Plus, his defense at 1st base gets better every week.
The heart and soul of the team has stepped up and it will only go up from here.
Harper is Having An MVP Caliber Season
I think by the end of the year Harper will be in the top 3 of MVP voting and once again give us October magic. It is a testament to how relentless this team has been lately that he isn’t the #1 guy that we are talking about.
This is going to be a special season for the Phillies. I have already said that this is the best Phillies team in my lifetime. I believe by the end of the year; Harper will be the guy that we are talking about the most.
