Don’t Let The Flyers Off The Hook, This Is A Embarrassing Collapse
In just a few weeks, we went from visions of playoff hockey for the Flyers to the gutters once again. 7 straight losses dropped them from prime playoff positioning, to outside of it all together. And unless they fix things fast, and get some help from other teams losing, they are going to miss the playoffs.
It should be said they overachieved this season. The expectation was that they would be in the gutter all season long. But expectations change as the season changes. The Flyers’ success changed how we view them. They have failed to live up to those new expectations.
John Tortorella Agrees That It’s A Poor Excuse
It is not just me who thinks that by the way. Take John Tortorella’s own words about it. He said he doesn’t want to hear that “we aren’t supposed to be here.”
“I am so proud the team getting here, and I guess now the narrative out there is that they’re young they’re not suppose to be here. Bull Sh**. We’re here, face it… That’s my frustration with me and that’s my frustration with the team. And if people can’t handle it, so be it… Let’s not fade away and say you know what, we’re not even supposed to be here, that sucks”.
Tortorella is right. That does suck. Just resigning ourselves to the thought that they weren’t even supposed to be here, sucks. This team was playing competitive hockey with good teams, even after the Sean Walker trade. Then it all went downhill.
Tortorella is not someone to blow smoke. If he thought this team was just not good enough, he would say it. The man came into his postgame press conference and questioned his players’ manhood for how they played. he doesn’t have a filter, and he certainly doesn’t nice things up for the media. He means it when he says he doesn’t agree that just getting this far is good enough.
Don’t Let The Flyers Off The Hook
If they were still looking competitive, but were just clearly at a talent disadvantage, it would be acceptable. If they were showing any fight at all, but just came up short, it would be acceptable. But to blow up like this is unacceptable. It is embarrassing to fall apart at the last hurdle like this.
The same people who loved Tortorella calling out his players are suddenly making up excuses for the collapse. If they just aren’t good enough though, why was John Tortorella so disappointed in them?
Like we questioned the Phillies and Gabe Kapler several years ago when they collapsed late in the season, we should question this team. Those Gabe Kapler teams in his first could of seasons weren’t stocked with talent. But we didn’t give him that excuse. The late-season collapses were still rightfully ripped.
The players deserve heat, and so does the head coach. That is not to say the coach should be fired, or they need to blow it up even more. They are still on the right track. I’m just saying it is fair to criticize this team. Far too many people seem willing to let them off the hook. If you just say it’s okay because “they weren’t supposed to be here anyway,” you are giving them excuses no other team in this city is allowed.
Losing 7 games in a row is inexcusable. Blowing their lead this late in the season is inexcusable. Hold the Flyers to account for it like you would any other team in this city. Saying “they arent supposed to be here,” is a terrible excuse.
