Braves Rock Phillies Bullpen, Spoil Opening Day
Opening Day at Citizens Bank Park brought so much excitement to Philadelphia. The Phillies couldn’t take advantage of the tremendous energy entering the 2024 MLB season. The Atlanta Braves took down the Phillies 9-3 in the first of a three-game weekend set.
Charlie Manuel threw out the ceremonial first pitch after his recent recovery from a stroke during the offseason. The moment ignited a Citizens Bank Park crowd ready to watch one of baseball’s best rivalries.
Wheeler, Phillies Take Ealy Lead
Both starting pitchers cruised through the first half of the game. Spencer Strider struck out six through four scoreless innings, but Brandon Marsh finally got the offense going in the bottom of the fifth.
Marsh put the Phillies up 2-0 with a home run ball to left center that cleared the outfield wall by inches.
Zack Wheeler continued to roll through the Atlanta order. He pitched six scoreless frames, allowing five hits and no walks. He recorded his fifth strikeout on his final hitter of the afternoon against Marcell Ozuna in the sixth. The Phillies ace took a no-decision, however.
Phillies Bullpen Implodes
Matt Strahm struggled after taking over for Wheeler in the seventh. He faced four batters and allowed three hits to surrender the lead. Jeff Hoffman finished the seventh, but the floodgates opened in the eighth.
Jose Alvarado allowed RBI singles to Ronald Acuna Jr. and Michael Harris II. He loaded up the bases full of Atlanta Braves to hand over to Connor Brogdon. The right-hander allowed the three inherited runners and two additional earned runs.
Matt Olson delivered the big blow with a bases-clearing double down the right field line to stretch the lead to 9-2. The Phillies couldn’t muster up a comeback in the final two innings.
The much-anticipated Opening Day matchup is behind them, but the Phillies and the Braves will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 4:05pm. Aaron Nola takes the ball for the Phillies against Max Fried.
