John Tortorella Faces Long List Of Obstacles On Road To Playoffs
Fans of the Philadelphia Flyers are all too familiar with watching star players like Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin light up the scoreboard. The two future Hall of Famers both scored goals to help their respective teams past the Orange and Black in consecutive weekends.
John Tortorella and the Flyers still hold the third and final bid for the playoffs in the Metropolitan Division. However, the talk throughout the 2023-24 season has been about how a more talented team could jump them with a second-half hot streak. Three consecutive weekends have included losses to Metropolitan Division opponents gaining on them in the standings.
- Saturday 2/17: New Jersey Devils 6, Flyers 3
- Sunday 2/25: Pittsburgh Penguins 7, Flyers 6
- Friday 3/1: Washington Capitals 5, Flyers 2
All three division rivals, as well as the New York Islanders, have games at hand on the third-place Flyers. The obstacles are mounting. Were the critics right about how it was only a matter of time until Philadelphia faded out of the race for the Stanley Cup Playoffs?
Flyers Facing Obstacles
Carter Hart’s absence eliminates the luxury of one of the best goaltending tandems in the NHL. Rookie Sam Ersson now faces tremendous pressure between the pipes in a playoff chase. He’ll take on the heaviest workload of his young professional career.
The Flyers have limited options behind Ersson. They sent Cal Petersen to the AHL after an ugly performance in Pittsburgh. Felix Sandstrom played well in his only start of the season. He still doesn’t have the NHL track record to inspire full confidence, however.
The injuries are piling up. Travis Konecny has missed five consecutive games despite an initial designation as day-to-day. Jamie Drysdale and Rasmus Ristolainen are also out of the lineup with longer-term injuries.
The 2024 NHL Trade Deadline is March 8. Sean Walker could be on the move to a Stanley Cup contender. Nick Seeler, Scott Laughton, and others have been mentioned in rumors throughout the season.
Consider the depleted lineup, threatening competition, an underwhelming 10-game stretch, and the possibility of Danny Briere and the front office subtracting more players. Is John Tortorella going to keep a sinking ship afloat and stay in position for the playoffs?
John Tortorella Handling Adversity
The Flyers tripped up Friday with a regulation loss in Washington in the more consequential game of their weekend back-to-back. Their playoff odds dipped down to 65% on Money Puck and 60% on Hockey Reference just a week after both models had them north of 75%.
They bounced back for a victory against the lowly Ottawa Senators in Philadelphia on Saturday. Tortorella didn’t seem surprised at his team’s quick recovery in a playoff race.
“They’ve assessed themselves pretty well this year. I had full confidence coming into tonight’s game that they were going to answer the proper way. It doesn’t mean you win (all) the games (after a loss), but I know they’re going to answer the proper way.” -John Tortorella
Tortorella is one of only five coaches in NHL history to win the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s coach as the year twice. He’s guided teams against strong adversity in the past, but he somehow isn’t the favorite to win the award a third time.
Ask the veteran head coach or any major voice within the organization about what’s different this season compared to recent disappointing seasons in Philadelphia. They’ll all point to the character of the group, the players’ willingness to fight for each other, and the comradery of the locker room.
Virtually every NHL team will point to similar cliches as a root of success. How can the Flyers put substance behind them?

The New Era of Orange
Recent franchise history includes teams that lacked character. The 2021-22 Flyers, most obviously, entered the season with newfound optimism after missing the playoffs in an underwhelming 56-game season in 2020-21. They acquired multiple players with strong character reputations around the NHL. Several of them had worn letters as alternate captains.
The background meant absolutely nothing when adversity struck. They played with no poise, and Alain Vigneault quickly lost his job. The easiest microcosm of their concentration came when Keith Yandle, a respected veteran with 16 years of NHL experience, botched a line change that led directly to a goal against.
Chuck Fletcher responded to the fiasco with public comments that didn’t indicate accountability. He pointed to a mounting list of injuries as the reason for a complete disaster. Intangible qualities you’ve heard about in hockey cliches meant absolutely nothing. Why would the 2023-24 Flyers be any different?
Dan Hilferty and the newly-constructed front office has announced a “New Era of Orange” in 2023-24. The goal is to get back to the attitude that once made the Flyers an admirable organization.
John Tortorella is the one trying to instill those qualities day-to-day, and he has an underwhelming roster in position for the playoffs. The team has taken on the identity of their head coach with strong will and a priority to avoid excuses. Will the old adage of a team fighting for each other make a difference while the Flyers fend off more talented teams?
