97.5 The Fanatic Flyers Roundup: The Stanley Cup Playoffs in Philly?
The first season in the New Era of Orange just might include a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Flyers just keep increasing their playoff odds and distancing themselves from a crowded group of Metropolitan Division teams initially projected to have better seasons in 2023-24.
- Wednesday 2/21: Flyers 3, Chicago Blackhawks 1
- Saturday 2/24: New York Rangers 2, Flyers 1

Playoff Odds
Despite the regulation loss against the Rangers, the Flyers sit with excellent odds to earn a playoff berth with a five-point lead for the third and final Metropolitan Division spot.
The Devils, Capitals, Islanders, and Penguin all entered the 2023-24 season with higher expectations than the Flyers. They all sit within relative striking distance with games at hand to catch the Flyers. However, if all four teams behind them hypothetically won every game at hand to even out the race with 58 games played for each team, the Flyers would still hold the same playoff position.
The Flyers play the Capitals twice and each of the other three teams once more during the regular season. The Atlantic Division currently owns both wild card spots in the Eastern Conference, but a lot will change after the March 8 trade deadline. The final 18 games after the deadline hold plenty of potential for drama, and coversations will persist about which lurking playoff contenders could knock off Philadelphia.
However, the Flyers still sit in the driver’s seat, and the odds that any of these division rivals can overtake them for a playoff spot just keep shrinking.
Money Puck places Philadelphia’s odds at 77%. The model lists Pittsburgh as the biggest threat at 33.8%. The other three Metropolitan bubble teams all sit below 25%. Hockey Reference also lists the Flyers at 77%, and Pittsburgh leads the threatening pack behind them with 30% odds.
NHL Trade Deadline Rumors
It’s silly season. The art of determining what’s a legitimate trade rumor, what’s a smokescreen, or what’s made up out of thin air now comes to the forefront before the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline.
Sean Walker has been the most consistently discussed player on the Flyers. It would make sense for Danny Briere to deal a 29-year-old impending unrestricted free agent (UFA) for a package that could potentially include a 1st-round pick. However, the Flyers have reportedly also discussed terms for an extension.
It’s appeared all along the Flyers are more likely to retain and extend fellow impending UFA Nick Seeler. They’ll probably choose to extend one of the two veteran defensemen and deal the other to a Stanley Cup contender.
Walker and Seeler have made up a solid second defensive pair in 2023-24, so buckle up for more rumors. The Flyers will be one of the most interesting teams in the NHL leading up to the deadline because of their unique position as both playoff contenders and sellers in a long-term rebuild.
Travis Konecny Injury
The Flyers announced shortly before the Rangers game that Travis Konecny is day-to-day with an upper-body injury suffered during Friday’s practice. The feisty right winger has been on a tear with 15 points in his last seven games. He’ll likely miss the Sunday matinee against the Penguins.
Konecny has worked into the role as the biggest offensive threat on the Flyers. A team that lacks superstar talent depends on players like him for the scoring punch. They’ll have a tough time competing with the high-octane offenses of the NHL’s top teams if he doesn’t return quickly.
Tyson Foerster took Konecny’s spot in the lineup against the Rangers. He had picked up his scoring pace before missing the previous four games with a lower-body injury. He scored the only Philadelphia goal in Saturday’s loss at the Wells Fargo Center.
Looking Ahead
The Flyers will jump right back to the NHL’s center stage with a Sunday matinee on national television against the Penguins.
