Daryl Morey Pivoting Approach to NBA Trade Market
Daryl Morey dealt James Harden in a blockbuster trade on October 31. Fans of the Philadelphia 76ers immediately turned the page to dreams of acquiring a replacement star like OG Anunoby, Zach LaVine, or Pascal Siakam.
However, Morey spoke on The John Kincade Show about the hot start to the Nick Nurse era in Philadelphia. How does the success affect his strategy approaching the NBA Trade Deadline on February 8?
“It makes it harder. Especially around December, teams don’t make big moves. Nick Nurse is already having trouble figuring out who to play night to night just because he’s got a lot of really good vets, all who deserve to play. If we’re going to add someone it’s got to be someone pretty good…We’re always looking to upgrade, but we’re not going to force anything that’s not there.” –Daryl Morey
Will Daryl Morey Execute A Trade?
The Sixers locked up their President of Basketball Operations through 2027-28 on December 15. He addressed the media about his plan for roster construction in 2023-24.
“You don’t get many chances to have a player like Joel (Embiid) playing at even an MVP-plus level, to have a young, up-and-coming player like Tyrese (Maxey) who continues to improve day by day. Then just a whole bunch of really solid guys that Nick has playing at a high level…If there’s something this year, we’ll do it this year because we don’t think this year can be taken for granted.” -Morey
The comments seemingly indicate an aggressive strategy. If a team has a championship window with a superstar like Joel Embiid, moving assets to maximize chances of winning the NBA Finals makes sense. However, Morey mentioned one unexpected factor.
The continued development of Tyrese Maxey wasn’t a major focus of the negative discourse surrounding the predicament the Sixers faced with Harden throughout the offseason.
“Him (Maxey) playing like pretty clearly the second-best player to an MVP level guy does change how you look at things. It does make you say it’s much easier to find guys to help in that context. Finding the second-best player on a title team (is something you) generally can’t do.” -Morey
All of a sudden, fans are optimistic about the current roster and the flexibility to add to it.
“It does open up a whole bunch of avenues to upgrade the team that wouldn’t have been there if Tyrese wasn’t making this leap that we hoped he could make.” -Morey
The 2023-24 Philadelphia 76ers
Nick Nurse also spoke on The John Kincade Show about supplementary players in their first season with the 76ers. He praised Nico Batum and Kelly Oubre Jr. as key parts of a strong supporting cast behind Embiid and Maxey.
“Batum has given us incredible versatility defensively because he can cover so many positions…We’re still tinkering with rotations, trying to figure out who ends the first, who starts the second, who ends the third, who starts the fourth, all those kinds of things that we’ve adjusted the last couple games… We’ll continue to tinker with that a bit until we think we’ve got it right.” –Nick Nurse
Morey doesn’t plan on acquiring a player who will become a scoring option over Tyrese Maxey. Nurse is outwardly happy with the chemistry of his in-house options.
The organization’s words don’t suggest the Sixers will make a big splash before the NBA Trade Deadline. Remarkably, the development of their in-house options might eliminate the need for a splash.
The logic behind “The Process” followed the idea that NBA teams needed to pick superstars at the top of the first round, trade significant future assets to acquire them, or save significant cap space to sign them.
Tyrese Maxey is breaking that mold. Could a former 21st-overall pick develop into a primary ball-handler for a championship team?
